In a recent episode of her podcast, Call It What It Is, Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington responded passionately to startling new statistics on parental mental health.
The advisory report, titled Parents Under Pressure: The U.S. Surgeon General Advisory on the Mental Health and Well-Being of Parents, reveals alarming trends, with nearly half of American parents feeling their stress is “overwhelming.”
Luddington, who plays Dr. Jo Wilson on the long-running ABC series, co-hosts the podcast with former Grey’s co-star Jessica Capshaw, known for her role as Dr. Arizona Robbins.
“This advisory hit me hard,” Luddington said during Thursday’s episode. “Forty-eight percent of parents are saying that most days, their stress is overwhelming—compared to only 26 percent of adults without kids. I read that, and I honestly thought it was horrifying.”
The two mothers discussed the mental toll parenting takes, drawing on their own experiences and struggles in balancing family with work.
Capshaw echoed Luddington’s sentiment, explaining the weight of parental stress: “Being overwhelmed is not good for anybody. You’re completely submerged, and when it’s about your kids, it’s constant. There’s no break.” The pair touched on the multifaceted challenges today’s parents face, from financial strain to the pervasive influence of social media on parenting styles.
“When I was growing up, sure, my parents were stressed,” Luddington recalled. “But now, it’s a different world. Parents today face financial pressures and social media scrutiny. We’re not just dealing with our own insecurities but also judgment from every angle.”
Social media, they agreed, has intensified the challenges of modern parenting. “We have so many opinions in the mix now—it’s like everyone has a rulebook on how to raise your kids,” Luddington said. “Even when you’re not looking for advice, it’s there, telling you what you’re doing wrong. I’ve reached the point where I question my own instincts, thinking, ‘I know my kid, but do I really know what I’m doing?’ It’s this endless cycle of overanalyzing that just wasn’t there for previous generations.”
Capshaw noted that society often downplays the reality of parenting stress. “People make it seem like parenting should be ‘no big deal,’ but it is a big deal. We’re pressured to make it look effortless, and that just isn’t realistic.”
Both Luddington and Capshaw are parents themselves, and their discussion resonated with listeners. Luddington, married to actor Matthew Alan, has two young children, Hayden and Lucas. Capshaw, with her husband, entrepreneur Christopher Gavigan, has four children: Luke, Eve, Poppy, and Josephine.
The episode struck a chord with parents and caregivers grappling with similar feelings. As Capshaw remarked, “If we don’t talk about it, we’re only adding to the shame and guilt that so many parents already feel.”

I was a single mom working full time with a 5 yr old and a 10 yr old. All because the hubby thought my neighbor was a better piece. Until you’ve had to struggle to even feed your kids, pay the bills and worry about everything all by yourself, you don’t really understand the stress. Back then (now 40 years ago) you just sucked it up and did the best you could. I’m thankful I had a Mom and Dad who helped when they could.
