In a scene that many are calling surreal, a massive “fountain” of raw sewage erupted in Moscow’s Novaya Moskva district, reaching higher than an 18-story building.

Footage circulating on Russian Telegram channels captures the disturbing spectacle of a geyser of waste shooting into the air from an underground pipeline on Bachurinskaya Street, near a school and medical center.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang just before the sewage began spewing skyward, drenching nearby buildings and a car park for several minutes.

Videos from shocked bystanders, including a delivery driver filming from a distance and residents filming from their balconies, reveal the dramatic aftermath as contaminated water and debris rained down on the area.

The incident took place near residential buildings, raising serious health concerns among locals. Moscow’s Ostorozhno Moskva Telegram channel detailed the location and impact, adding that the city’s local authorities are scrambling to contain the situation and mitigate health risks.

Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled natural gas giant, later issued a statement claiming that a “cleaning process” for a section of gas pipeline had led to the eruption. Representatives insisted that the situation is “under control,” though Moscow residents are skeptical.

Anton Gerashchenko, a former interior minister of Ukraine, shared footage of the incident on social media, echoing reports of Moscow’s sewage system malfunctioning. “A ‘fountain’ the height of a residential building is seen in one of Moscow’s districts,” he posted, underscoring the severity of the situation.

The incident serves as a shocking reminder of infrastructure challenges facing Moscow. Local authorities are currently working to manage the fallout and address public health risks as Moscow’s residents grapple with the unsettling sight and lingering odors that have permeated the area.

  2. As a victim of sewer backup issues, at least they don’t have city officials contacting a local profit seeker eager to exploit your troubles with added financial issues due to lies and calling you repeatedly while you are cleaning up.
