In a case that shocked Long Island, Kayla Alvarenga, 22, and her group of accomplices have been charged with the brutal murder of Linver Ortiz Ponce, 29.
This violent crime highlights the growing lawlessness plaguing many communities, as the defendants stand accused of kidnapping, beating, and eventually murdering Ortiz Ponce—simply because he parked his car outside Alvarenga’s home.
The crime, which took place on September 16, 2022, in Bay Shore, Suffolk County, is described by District Attorney Ray Tierney as “senseless” and “without provocation.” “No one deserves to suffer a violent death for simply parking a car,” Tierney said in a statement, emphasizing the tragic absurdity of the crime.
Ortiz Ponce had parked his Chevy Camaro on Fifth Avenue in front of Alvarenga’s home, which sparked a confrontation between the two.
After he refused to move his vehicle, Alvarenga reportedly called on her friends, including Christopher Perdomo, 27, and five teenagers, for backup. Shockingly, the group had already been involved in a separate carjacking earlier that night, driving a stolen BMW to the scene.
They forcibly removed Ortiz Ponce from his car, beat him, and stole his vehicle, according to DA Tierney’s office. Surveillance footage later captured the group fleeing from the scene. Ortiz Ponce, now injured, tried to escape, hiding between cars at a nearby gas station. Alvarenga allegedly directed Perdomo and the rest of the crew to hunt him down.
What happened next is chilling. Perdomo and several minors tracked down Ortiz Ponce, forcing him into the stolen BMW at gunpoint. They drove to a nearby church where they beat him again. But this wasn’t the end. On Alvarenga’s orders, Perdomo allegedly shot Ortiz Ponce as he tried to crawl away. Prosecutors said Perdomo fired multiple times, ensuring Ortiz Ponce’s death.
Authorities later arrested Perdomo in Georgia, where he had moved in May. He was arraigned on first-degree murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy charges last week. He faces life in prison without parole if convicted. Alvarenga, the alleged mastermind behind the horrific crime, will be arraigned on October 30. The teenage co-defendants have also been taken into custody, with charges pending.
This case has sparked outrage in the community, not only because of its senseless violence but also because of the broader concern over rising crime. Recent FBI statistics show a troubling increase in violent crimes, especially in suburban areas that were once considered safe. Many locals are left questioning how this could happen in their own backyard.
This incident comes at a time when public safety is increasingly becoming a top concern for Americans. Some argue that lenient policies and a soft-on-crime approach contribute to the rising violence. Others believe it’s a lack of accountability that emboldens criminals to commit such heinous acts.
The crime’s proximity to a church adds another layer of sorrow. For many, churches are sanctuaries, places of peace and reflection. To have such a violent crime occur near a House of Prayer is a stark reminder of how deeply crime is infiltrating even the most sacred spaces in our communities.
As we await the upcoming trials, many are left wondering: how did things get so out of control? What could have been done to prevent this tragedy? It’s a question that will haunt this community long after the court verdicts come in.
The justice system will now take its course, but the scars left on the Bay Shore community will take much longer to heal.
