San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will make his NFL debut Sunday. 50 days after being shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco’s Union Square.

Pearsall, a first-round draft pick from the University of Florida, survived without damage to his organs or nerves and made a quick recovery.

Pearsall was one of college football’s top receivers last season, recording 55 catches for 917 yards and 7 touchdowns. Known for his speed and big-play ability, he was expected to be a major contributor to the 49ers’ offense before injuries and the shooting sidelined him. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said Pearsall practiced all week and showed no signs of lingering issues.

“There was no expectation for when he’d be ready,” Shanahan said. “But he looked great all week, and today was his best day. So the decision to activate him was easy.”

Pearsall’s shooting brings attention to the rise in crime in San Francisco, especially in tourist areas like Union Square. Local residents are concerned about safety, with some saying the incident highlights the growing threat to everyday people. “If an athlete can be targeted, what does that mean for the rest of us?” said Maria Gonzalez, a resident.

Crime experts are also warning city leaders. “Violent crime is becoming more frequent, and people feel unsafe,” said analyst Joe Brady. “Incidents like this show the city’s vulnerability.”

Media outlets have offered different takes on San Francisco’s crime issue. Left-leaning sources downplay the rise in crime, arguing it’s being overblown. Conservative outlets, however, see it as a failure of liberal policies and cite Pearsall’s incident as proof of the city’s decline.

Despite his ordeal, Pearsall is ready to play, which has energized his teammates. “The guys are pumped,” Shanahan said. “They’re really happy he’s back. He had a great week of practice.”

Pearsall’s return comes at a key time, with No. 3 receiver Jauan Jennings out with a hip injury. Shanahan said Pearsall could play both on special teams and at receiver. His deep-threat ability will help the 49ers against the defending champion Chiefs.

In other injury news, running back Jordan Mason (shoulder) and receiver Deebo Samuel (wrist) will play Sunday. The 49ers will also make a change at kicker. Matthew Wright is heading to injured reserve after hurting his shoulder in kickoff coverage. Anders Carlson will handle kicking duties this week.

Pearsall’s comeback is an inspiring story of resilience. But it also shines a light on the broader issue of public safety in San Francisco. His quick recovery has thrilled 49ers fans, but the incident raises serious questions about crime in the city.
