Legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is making waves again, this time with a surprise country album. Look Up, set to drop in January.
The record features collaborations with bluegrass stars like Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle—but don’t expect a celebrity-packed album. Starr took a swipe at modern artists, specifically Post Malone, for overloading their albums with big names.
“I didn’t want to do one of those records like Post Malone just did, where there’s a face card added onto every song. I felt it was beneath Ringo,” Starr said in a bombshell interview with Variety. “Why throw celebrity at Ringo Starr?”
The iconic rocker also opened up about a recent health scare that forced him to cancel shows on his All-Starr Band Tour. Contrary to rumors, Starr confirmed it wasn’t COVID but something much more alarming—a white blood cell count of 12,000 from what he described as “a mad thing eating my body.”
“That’s what saved your life—they were fighting the attacker,” Starr explained. “With pills and medication, I got over it in two weeks.”
Produced by industry giant T Bone Burnett, Starr’s new country project proves that the octogenarian still has gas in the tank. “I saw him play at the Ryman a few months ago,” Burnett said. “He ran up the stairs to his dressing room like he was 20. He’s got plenty of miles left in him.”
Starr also shared his thoughts on the upcoming Beatles ‘64 documentary, set to air on Disney+ this November. Directed by David Tedeschi and co-produced by Starr, the film covers a pivotal year in Beatles history.
“Honestly, it’s hard now,” Starr reflected. “There’s only Paul and I left, and it was the four of us…”
