The MMA community was struck with devastating news this week, as former UFC and Bellator fighter Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos passed away at the age of 38. The tragic news was confirmed by his uncle on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the world of combat sports.
Vasconcelos’ uncle shared the heartbreaking reality of the loss in a public statement: “We were looking forward to your visit for Christmas, which will no longer happen. Life is fleeting, and we woke up to this devastating news. We pray for you. May God, who can do all things, welcome you in His infinite mercy and comfort all who have always loved you.”
Known for his powerful performances in the octagon, Vasconcelos earned a 10-6 record during his MMA career. His explosive fighting style and determination earned him the nickname “Bomba,” making him a respected and beloved figure among fans and fighters alike.
In what would tragically become his final social media post, less than 24 hours before his passing, Vasconcelos shared a photo of a Jiu-Jitsu studio on his Instagram Story—symbolizing his enduring dedication to martial arts.
According to FOX insider Jay Glazer, Vasconcelos died by suicide. Glazer, who had a close personal relationship with the fighter, took to social media to emphasize the importance of mental health, writing:
“Gang… please take care of your mental health. Please ask for help. I’m urging you to know that people WANT to help; you’re not a burden. We lost a really sweet brother today to suicide, far too early. He was one of the kindest souls I’ve known. This one is hard—he was like a big brother to my son, lived with me for years. Help is always available. Lean into your support system. Love you, little bro.”
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for continued support for those facing emotional struggles. As a society, we must remain vigilant in ensuring that those in need feel they have a safe space to seek help.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Guilherme Vasconcelos’ family, friends, and the MMA community during this incredibly difficult time. May God provide peace and comfort to those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos.
