Meghan Markle has made a stunning revelation about her eight-year estrangement from her father, Thomas Markle, claiming she deliberately kept him away from her children because of disturbing allegations she learned about long before they became public.

The Duchess of Sussex, 45, broke her silence Friday after reports emerged that her 82-year-old father is under investigation in the Philippines over allegations involving child sexual abuse images.

But it was Meghan’s explanation of what she knew years earlier that added an unexpected twist to an already explosive family controversy.

In a rare public statement, the former actress said she was “deeply distressed” by the latest allegations and revealed that troubling accusations involving her father had been brought to her attention in 2018, the same year she married Prince Harry.

According to Meghan, a letter containing serious allegations against Thomas was sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit. She said the letter was subsequently shared with her and that she received assurances the claims were being investigated.

Now, eight years later, Meghan says those concerns explain why her father has never been allowed to meet her two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

The duchess maintained that her decision was motivated by one priority: protecting her family.

She also suggested that years of public criticism surrounding her broken relationship with her father had failed to tell the full story.

For years, the former Suits star has faced questions about why she refused to reconcile with Thomas, particularly as he experienced serious health problems. Their highly publicized falling-out began around her May 2018 royal wedding, when he became embroiled in a controversy involving staged paparazzi photographs before ultimately missing the ceremony.

What initially appeared to be a bitter family disagreement has now taken a far more serious turn.

According to British newspaper The Sun, Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., reported finding what he believed to be a large collection of child sexual abuse images among computers and electronic devices stored at their father’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines.

Thomas Jr. reportedly contacted authorities after making the alleged discovery and claimed the collection could contain hundreds or even thousands of images.

Philippine officials have now confirmed that the allegations are being investigated.

Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty told Reuters that a specialized task force dealing with human trafficking and online child exploitation in Cebu is examining the matter.

Philippine Interior Minister Jonvic Remulla also confirmed that Meghan’s half-brother provided investigators with evidence, including a laptop. Thomas Jr. reportedly contacted the FBI as well, although American authorities have not publicly confirmed the status of any related inquiry.

Thomas Markle Sr. has strongly denied the accusations.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the retired Hollywood lighting director called the allegations “sick lies” and expressed shock that his own son had accused him of something so serious.

He insisted he could never have committed the alleged acts and accused Thomas Jr. of attempting to destroy his reputation.

The allegations remain unproven, and the ongoing investigation does not establish that Thomas Markle committed a crime.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s disclosure about the 2018 letter has raised another significant question: What happened after British authorities received the original allegations?

According to Sky News, the Metropolitan Police are conducting an internal inquiry to determine whether the letter was passed to Meghan by officers assigned to royal protection. The outlet also reported that the force had not previously investigated Thomas Markle and was not currently investigating him.

That distinction has added a new layer of uncertainty to Meghan’s account, particularly because she said she believed the earlier allegations were being examined.

Thomas Markle, who previously lived in Mexico before relocating to the Philippines in 2025, is now back in the United States following serious medical difficulties. He underwent a leg amputation after suffering a blood clot and has reportedly been receiving rehabilitation treatment in Florida.

Despite his health struggles, the father and daughter have remained largely estranged since 2018, and he has never met his royal grandchildren.

For Meghan, the latest controversy has brought years of painful family history back into the spotlight. But her statement also represents one of her clearest public explanations yet for the boundaries she established between her father and her children.

She said she hopes justice will be served and that the safety of children remains the priority.

As investigators in the Philippines examine the allegations, major questions remain about the evidence, the handling of the earlier claims, and whether the investigation will lead to any criminal charges.
