A large police presence outside a South Carolina Costco raised concerns Tuesday morning after a man was found dead inside a vehicle in the store’s parking lot.

The incident unfolded October 20 at the Costco Wholesale location on Piney Grove Road in Columbia, where officers blocked off part of the parking lot while investigating the death.

Despite the police activity outside the popular warehouse retailer, the store reportedly remained open. An employee confirmed to The State that Costco continued operating as authorities worked at the scene.

Columbia Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly later confirmed that the man had died by suicide. He emphasized that there was no threat to the public, reassuring residents that the incident did not present an ongoing danger.

Investigators also revealed an unusual detail about the case. According to Kelly, there was no indication that the deceased man was employed by Costco or had been shopping at the store that day.

What brought him to the parking lot remains unclear, and authorities have not publicly disclosed the circumstances leading up to his death.

The man’s identity had not been publicly released as of Thursday, October 22. The Richland County Coroner’s Office is working with police to establish his identity and notify his relatives before releasing additional information.

For now, the circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain largely unknown. Although the police response temporarily restricted access to part of the parking lot, officials stressed that there was no continuing danger to Costco shoppers, employees or the surrounding community.
