What was supposed to be another exciting night of music took a frightening turn when Grammy-winning singer Michael Salgado suffered a stroke just one song into his concert, triggering a medical emergency that ended with the beloved performer being airlifted to a hospital.
The Tejano music star was performing at the Graham County Fair in Safford, Arizona, on October 9 when the emergency unfolded shortly after he finished his opening song. Salgado, known for his powerful voice and signature accordion playing, was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital before being flown to Tucson for additional medical treatment.
The frightening incident forced the longtime entertainer to cut his performance short and raised concerns about his health, particularly given his history of strokes.
Two days after the emergency, Salgado returned to his hometown of San Antonio, Texas, where doctors continued monitoring his condition and conducting tests. In an emotional statement released October 15, the singer confirmed what had happened and revealed that his medical team had advised him to temporarily stop performing.
His cardiologist, neurologist and stroke specialist recommended that he take time away from the stage while undergoing further evaluation. As a result, Salgado announced that his upcoming concerts would be postponed for at least the next couple of weeks, with his return dependent on medical clearance.
“Music and performing for all of you have always been a huge part of my life,” Salgado told fans, acknowledging how difficult it was to step away from something he loves. Still, he recognized that his health and recovery needed to come first.
The latest medical emergency is particularly concerning because it is not the first time Salgado has battled this serious condition.
In August 2017, the singer experienced stroke symptoms while performing, later revealing that he had developed numbness on his left side and struggled to play his accordion. He suffered another stroke in early 2018, prompting further medical evaluations and treatment.
Salgado later disclosed that doctors had discovered an issue involving blood flow through his heart, which led to surgery. Despite those setbacks, he recovered and returned to performing, continuing a music career that has spanned three decades.
The two-time Latin Grammy Award winner has become a beloved figure in Tejano and regional Mexican music, earning generations of loyal fans with songs including “Cruz de Madera” and “Palomita Blanca.”
His unexpected health crisis has now cast uncertainty over several upcoming appearances, including his scheduled October 25 headlining performance at Muertos Fest in San Antonio. The popular Día de los Muertos celebration runs October 23 through 25, although organizers had not confirmed the final status of his appearance in the latest available reports.
For now, Salgado is focused on recovering, but he has made it clear that he hopes to return to the stage.
In his message, the singer thanked his family, friends, fellow musicians and fans for their continued prayers and encouragement during another difficult chapter in his life.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for standing by me,” he wrote.
Although no official return date has been announced, Salgado remains hopeful that he will once again be able to do what he loves most: perform for the fans who have supported him throughout his career.
