New details have emerged about the sudden death of longtime soap opera star Robert Kelker-Kelly, with emergency dispatch recordings revealing the desperate effort to save the 62-year-old actor at his Missouri home.
Kelker-Kelly, best known for playing Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives, died Saturday, October 3, after authorities were called to his St. Peters home for a medical emergency.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 8:16 p.m. after receiving a report of an unconscious man who was not breathing.
Audio from the emergency response described the incident as a “cardiac arrest” and indicated Kelker-Kelly had been found unresponsive in bed.
At one point, emergency personnel were told that the person with Kelker-Kelly was unable to move him from the bed. Dispatchers were also informed that CPR was already underway as police officers and paramedics rushed to the home.
The St. Peters Police Department said officers responded alongside emergency medical personnel and continued lifesaving measures after arriving.
Despite those efforts, Kelker-Kelly could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The St. Charles County Ambulance District has confirmed that paramedics were dispatched for an adult male suffering cardiac arrest and used advanced lifesaving procedures before the patient was pronounced dead.
Police said investigators found nothing suspicious at the home and that the circumstances appeared consistent with a medical emergency.
Kelker-Kelly had reportedly complained of chest pain before becoming unresponsive.
While the emergency itself was classified as a cardiac arrest, that term describes the loss of heart function and does not necessarily establish the underlying medical condition that caused it. Authorities have not publicly announced evidence of foul play.
His body was subsequently released by the medical examiner to a local funeral home.
Kelker-Kelly’s death brought an abrupt end to the life of an actor who became one of daytime television’s most recognizable faces during the height of the soap opera era.
He joined Days of Our Lives in 1992, taking over the iconic role of Bo Brady from Peter Reckell.
For the next three years, Kelker-Kelly became a major part of the NBC soap, appearing alongside Kristian Alfonso as Hope Brady and Lisa Rinna as Billie Reed.
His storyline with Rinna became especially popular with viewers, and the two won a Soap Opera Digest Award for Hottest Couple in 1995. Kelker-Kelly also received recognition for his dramatic work on the series during his run.
Reckell returned as Bo Brady after Kelker-Kelly left Days in 1995.
Kelker-Kelly had already established himself in daytime television before joining Days. He began appearing on Another World in the late 1980s, most notably playing Sam Fowler.
He later joined General Hospital as villain Stavros Cassadine, appearing on the ABC soap in the early 2000s and eventually returning to the character years later. His final television appearances came during returns to General Hospital in 2013 and 2014.
After largely stepping away from acting, Kelker-Kelly pursued another longtime interest and worked as a professional aircraft pilot.
His name resurfaced in entertainment headlines earlier this year when Rinna discussed their difficult relationship behind the scenes at Days of Our Lives in her memoir.
Rinna alleged that Kelker-Kelly had been verbally abusive, manipulative and unpredictable during their years working together. She also described their off-camera relationship as extremely tense.
Kelker-Kelly did not publicly respond to those allegations before his death.
For longtime soap fans, however, he will remain closely associated with one of Days of Our Lives’ most famous characters and an era when daytime dramas routinely drew millions of viewers.
The newly released emergency recordings now offer a somber glimpse at the frantic final effort to save the former soap star before his death at 62.
