A Minnesota football player got a little too excited during Saturday’s upset of Michigan — and his own quarterback paid the price.

Golden Gophers offensive lineman Bennett Warren accidentally kicked quarterback Drake Lindsey in the groin while celebrating a first down during Minnesota’s 20-14 victory over No. 24 Michigan at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Video of the bizarre moment quickly spread online.

Warren, a massive offensive lineman listed at 6-foot-7 and around 300 pounds, appeared to pump his fists and yell in celebration before throwing his right leg into the air.

There was just one problem.

Lindsey was standing directly behind him.

Warren’s foot caught the quarterback between the legs, sending Lindsey recoiling as he grabbed onto his teammate and tried to protect himself from any further damage.

The kick appeared to be completely accidental, and Lindsey was able to remain in the game. There was no immediate indication that he suffered an injury from the mishap.

Fortunately for Minnesota, the uncomfortable moment did not derail its quarterback.

Lindsey recovered from two costly first-half interceptions and eventually delivered the biggest throw of the afternoon, connecting with running back Darius Taylor for a three-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The score gave Minnesota a 20-14 lead that it never surrendered.

Lindsey finished the game completing 17 passes for 136 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Minnesota’s defense played an even bigger role in the comeback.

Defensive backs Aydan West and Zack Harden intercepted Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood in the second half, with both turnovers helping set up Minnesota scores.

Harden’s interception came just seconds into the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Lindsey found Taylor for the go-ahead touchdown.

Underwood finished 10-of-21 passing for just 101 yards as Minnesota held Michigan to only 180 total yards.

The victory carried plenty of historical significance for the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota had not beaten Michigan since 2014 and had not defeated the Wolverines at home since 1977.

Saturday’s matchup was also the 100th meeting between the schools with the Little Brown Jug at stake, one of college football’s oldest rivalry trophies.

When the final seconds disappeared, Minnesota fans poured onto the field to celebrate as the Gophers reclaimed the Jug.

Minnesota improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play with the victory.

Michigan fell to 3-2 after entering the game as the ranked favorite.

For Lindsey, it was an afternoon that included two interceptions, a game-winning touchdown pass and one celebration from a teammate he probably will not forget anytime soon.
