Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s Explosive Love Life Exposed

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz became one of television’s most beloved couples, but behind the laughter, their 20-year marriage was reportedly filled with wild passion, bitter jealousy and allegations of repeated affairs.

More than six decades after the I Love Lucy stars divorced, books about the legendary pair continue to pull back the curtain on a relationship that was far messier than anything viewers saw on television.

According to The Sad & Tragic Ending of Lucille Ball: Volume 2, by Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince, Ball and Arnaz were consumed by an intense physical attraction from the moment they met.

The authors claimed the couple eloped in 1940 after a particularly passionate night together.

Arnaz, who was 28 at the time, allegedly woke Ball early the following morning and announced, “We’re getting married.”

They quickly tied the knot, beginning one of Hollywood’s most famous — and turbulent — marriages.

The next day, the newlyweds reportedly attended a meeting with RKO Pictures president George Schaefer. Arnaz apparently arrived with his pants accidentally unzipped.

Ball, never one to miss a punchline, reportedly joked, “George, Desi believes in advertising.”

But the laughter reportedly hid serious trouble.

The authors described their relationship as a “mad love affair,” claiming rumors of infidelity followed the couple almost from the beginning.

Arnaz was accused of regularly pursuing other women and allegedly hiring sex workers. The book also repeated an explosive, unproven claim that Arnaz got actress Ginger Rogers pregnant and accompanied her to Canada for an abortion.

Other biographers have described Ball’s fury over her husband’s alleged wandering eye.

In Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television, author Todd S. Purdum claimed Ball erupted after Arnaz allegedly spent an evening with pinup star Betty Grable.

Ball reportedly stormed into the Hollywood home Arnaz shared with his mother, pushed past her at the door and confronted her husband while he was still in bed.

She allegedly called him a “two-timing bastard” — with his mother close enough to hear the entire blowup.

According to Porter and Prince, Arnaz allegedly believed a man could remain devoted to his wife while treating affairs as meaningless encounters.

“You respect and love your wife,” he was quoted as believing, while women “on the side” meant nothing.

Ball was also the subject of affair rumors.

The redheaded comedy legend was rumored to have had a romance with longtime friend and actor Henry Fonda, although the claim was never confirmed.

One of the wildest stories surrounding the marriage involved Scotty Bowers, a former Hollywood hustler who claimed he arranged sexual encounters for some of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars.

In his 2012 memoir, Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, Bowers claimed Arnaz frequently contacted him and tipped the workers more generously than nearly anyone else.

Ball allegedly discovered what was happening — and confronted Bowers at a party.

According to his account, she slapped him across the face and demanded, “You stop pimping for my husband, y’hear!”

Despite the alleged betrayals, fights and public humiliation, Ball and Arnaz built an entertainment empire together.

They welcomed daughter Lucie Désirée Arnaz in 1951 and son Desiderio “Desi” Alberto Arnaz Jr. in 1953.

Their groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy turned them into television royalty, while their production company, Desilu, became one of the most influential studios in Hollywood.

But the marriage could not survive the turmoil.

Ball and Arnaz officially divorced in 1960 after two decades together.

Even then, their love story was not completely over.

The two remained emotionally connected and reportedly continued to care deeply for each other for the rest of their lives.

“They had a very successful divorce,” their daughter Lucie told Closer Weekly in 2020.

“They never said bad words about each other, and they stayed friends until the day they died.”

It was a surprisingly tender ending for a romance that had reportedly been fueled by passion, betrayal and enough behind-the-scenes drama to rival any Hollywood script.
