Fans of the iconic ‘90s TV hit Gladiators are mourning the loss of one of its fiercest and most unforgettable stars.
Lize Van der Walt — known to millions as “Gold” — has died at 60, closing the chapter on a life that once lit up television screens with raw power, grit, and undeniable charisma.
Born in South Africa and raised in Switzerland, Van der Walt quickly stood out as a natural athlete, dominating in running and climbing before eventually making her way to the United Kingdom. It was there, while working as a personal trainer, that friends pushed her to audition for Gladiators — a move that would change her life forever.
When she burst onto the scene in 1997, she didn’t just compete — she commanded attention. With her striking presence and relentless strength, “Gold” became an instant fan favorite, embodying the fearless spirit that defined the show at its peak.
But behind the scenes, her rise was cut short. A string of injuries forced her out of the spotlight, sidelining one of the show’s brightest stars just as her popularity soared. Still, Van der Walt wasn’t done. She eventually returned to the Gladiators Arena in 2000, marking what show insiders later described as a “proud full-circle moment.”
After stepping away from TV, she reinvented herself far from the arena — returning to South Africa to pursue life as an artist and psychosocial coach, helping others navigate personal struggles with the same strength she once displayed on screen.
In 2013, Van der Walt was hit with another battle — a cancer diagnosis that would ultimately define her later years. She fought for over a decade before passing away this past Sunday.
Following the heartbreaking news, the BBC paid tribute to the late star, honoring her legacy and the impact she left behind. “You will always be part of Gladiators history,” the network said in a statement.
For fans who grew up watching her dominate the arena, “Gold” wasn’t just a competitor — she was a symbol of strength, resilience, and pure ‘90s TV magic.
