A 21-year-old North Carolina artist who had just been reported missing by his family is now at the center of a shocking security breach at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
Authorities have identified the man shot and killed by Secret Service agents early Sunday morning as Austin Tucker Martin of Cameron, North Carolina.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. when Martin allegedly entered the secured inner perimeter of the Palm Beach property. He was reportedly carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a gas can.
Secret Service agents confronted him and ordered him to drop the weapon. Officials say he refused. Agents then opened fire. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Just hours before the deadly confrontation, Martin’s family had contacted authorities to report him missing on Saturday, February 21. Investigators are now trying to piece together his movements, including when and where he obtained the firearm and whether it was purchased during his drive from North Carolina to Florida.
A shotgun box was reportedly recovered from his vehicle after the shooting. Officials have not confirmed whether Martin had any prior encounters with law enforcement. A motive has not been publicly released.
Online, Martin appeared to live a quiet, creative life. His social media accounts show watercolor paintings and black-and-white sketches, many inspired by golf course landscapes in North Carolina’s Sandhills region, including areas near Pinehurst. His posts were minimal, often set to electronic music, and showed little engagement.
President Donald Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago during the incident. He remained in Washington, D.C., following the annual Governors’ Dinner at the White House with First Lady Melania Trump.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the response, writing on X that Secret Service agents “acted quickly and decisively” in the middle of the night to neutralize what she described as an armed intruder.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is dedicating “all necessary resources” to the investigation.
Federal and local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breach. Residents in the surrounding South Florida area have been asked to review home security footage in case it captured Martin’s movements before the confrontation.
What led a 21-year-old artist from a small North Carolina town to breach one of the most heavily guarded private residences in the country remains the unanswered question at the heart of this unfolding story.
