A tight-knit California community is reeling after a well-known farming couple was found dead in what authorities are calling an apparent tragic accident — leaving behind their three teenage children.

John “Jay” Ruskey and his wife, Kristen Ruskey, were discovered deceased at a residence in Cambria, California, on Sunday, Feb. 8. According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, the circumstances do not appear suspicious, though officials are still investigating. Autopsy and toxicology reports are pending, and few details have been made public.

Tony Cipolla, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed there are no signs of foul play at this time.

The sudden loss has shaken the coastal farming community, where the Ruskeys were widely known for both their agricultural innovation and their deep involvement in local causes.

Nestled along California’s scenic Central Coast, Cambria is known for its ocean views and agricultural roots — a place where neighbors know one another and families often work the land for generations.

Jay Ruskey was considered a pioneer in California’s emerging coffee movement. In 1992, he founded Good Land Organics, specializing in exotic fruit. He later co-founded Frinj Coffee, helping position California-grown coffee on the global stage.

Just weeks before his death, the company made headlines after becoming the first California-grown coffee producer to compete at the Dubai Coffee Auction. Ruskey told the Santa Barbara Independent in January that their washed Geisha variety stood out for its flavor and “cleanliness in the cup,” adding that international buyers were taking notice of their craftsmanship.

But beyond business success, friends say the couple’s greatest pride was their family.

A GoFundMe launched to support their children — Kasurina, 19, and twins Sean and Aiden, both 16 — has already raised nearly $130,000. Organizers described Jay and Kristen as “caring and generous members of our community” and “loving and fiercely engaged parents.”

“We are all at a loss to navigate this unimaginable tragedy,” the fundraiser reads. “Any donation, no matter how small, is deeply appreciated as we honor Jay and Kristen’s memory by supporting their children.”

The funds will go toward funeral expenses, memorial arrangements, and helping ease the immediate financial burden facing the teens as they cope with the sudden loss of both parents.

As the investigation continues, neighbors are left grappling with the shock — and rallying around three young people now forced to face life without the two people who built everything for them.
