Meghan Markle’s lifestyle brand and royal exit were back under the microscope during a fiery debate on Channel 5’s show Vanessa, where one guest flat-out declared the public has moved on from the Duchess of Sussex.
Host Vanessa was joined by broadcaster Jenny Powell and journalist Cosmo Landesman to discuss whether people are underestimating Meghan — and things got heated fast.
Jenny actually started out on Meghan’s side, praising her pre-royal career.
“There’s been a journey that she’s been through,” she said. “I watched Suits, by the way, and I thought it was brilliant. I thought she was a great actress. The whole royal story and all the rest of it and now not so royal.”
But Jenny also admitted that, good or bad, the noise around Meghan still works for her brand.
“I think for her and for her profile, no matter whether she’s talked about in a good way or a bad way, if it’s going to help her with her brand, then maybe that’s the karma. Maybe that’s where she’s going to come through and make loads of money.”
That’s when Cosmo jumped in and went for the jugular.
“People always want a royal to hate,” he said. “She’s been taken over by Andrew. Who cares about Meghan? We’ve got Andrew to all hate. What else is going to bring us together and talk about?”
Jenny argued that this kind of backlash is practically built into the job when you marry into the Firm.
“I think they half expect it, don’t they? Especially when they marry into the royal family. It must be part and parcel of the whole job description.”
The conversation then turned to Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard venture, from jam to that ultra-aesthetic “English tea” lifestyle she seems to be selling. Vanessa questioned why “someone like Meghan” would be flogging jam to people who have “much less money than she has.”
Jenny suggested Meghan knows exactly what she’s doing. As an American who joined the Royal Family, she’s “clocked on” that the romanticized English tea-and-scones fantasy sells — and sells big.
Cosmo, however, wasn’t buying any of it. He dismissed the brand outright and took another swipe at Meghan’s royal past.
“That was her biggest success, bagging a royal,” he said bluntly. “That’s what she did when there are probably lots of other women who wanted that gig, and she managed to do it. God knows how but she did it.”
The takedown comes on the heels of another jab from broadcaster Dan Wootton, who recently claimed one of Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard candles turned up… without a wick.
“Meghan Markle is boasting about how successful her American Riviera Orchard products are. But they’re also cheap tat,” he said, explaining that his fiancé bought the candle as a joke gift — and it arrived with no way to light it.
“I wasn’t going to mention it because I don’t want people to think I was putting money into her pocket,” he continued, before holding the candle up to the camera. “But there’s no wick again! No way to light this thing. Seriously, look!”
Love her or loathe her, Meghan’s name clearly still stirs up ratings, debates, and plenty of drama — even if some TV pundits now insist “who cares about her?”
