It’s the kind of on-air chaos late-night TV dreams are made of.
A new tell-all book about Johnny Carson’s legendary run on The Tonight Show is bringing back one of the wildest moments in TV history — the night Marlon Brando and Zsa Zsa Gabor traded barbs so viciously that Gabor stormed right off the set.
According to author Mark Malkoff’s new release, Love Johnny Carson, the now-iconic clash happened back in May 1963 when Carson filmed from Burbank, California. Brando, already Hollywood royalty and clearly a few drinks in, joined socialite-turned-actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was there to promote her latest beauty cream.
At first, it was all charm. Brando reportedly called Gabor “fascinating and charming.” But when the glamour queen started interrupting, the mood soured fast.
After Brando delivered a lukewarm knock-knock joke that earned more courtesy claps than laughs, Gabor snapped, “Only for Marlon Brando would they applaud for that.” Brando shot back with his own jab: “Are we going to have to sit here all night and listen to your crappy plugs?”
That was it. Gabor fired a few more insults, then stormed off set — leaving Carson speechless and Brando smirking.
The book paints it as one of those perfectly unscripted moments that defined The Tonight Show during Carson’s reign, when celebrity egos and booze sometimes mixed with explosive results.
Brando, of course, went on to win two Oscars — for On the Waterfront and The Godfather — before retreating from Hollywood in his later years. He died in 2004 at 80, leaving behind one of the most unpredictable legacies in film.
As Jack Nicholson once said, “Marlon Brando will be there forever — that’s all there is to it.”
