Hollywood icon George Clooney is mourning the death of his older sister, Adelia “Ada” Zeidler, who passed away on December 19 at age 65 after a battle with cancer.

“She faced down cancer with courage and humor,” Clooney told People in an emotional statement. “I’ve never met anyone so brave. Amal and I will miss her terribly.”

Ada, who lived a quiet life in her hometown of Augusta, Kentucky, died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood.

Born in Los Angeles on May 2, 1960, to journalist and TV host Nick Clooney and writer Nina Bruce Warren, Ada was known locally as a gifted artist and devoted teacher. Her obituary described her as “a talented artist” who shared her passion through teaching art at Augusta Independent School and connecting with her community through the Augusta Art Guild and her local book club.

In 1987, Ada married retired Army Captain Norman Zeidler in a small-town Kentucky wedding attended by family, friends, and even the whole community. George read scripture during the ceremony, while their famous aunt, singer Rosemary Clooney, serenaded the couple.

Although she largely stayed out of the public eye, Ada was by her brother’s side for his 2014 wedding to Amal Clooney in Venice, Italy — one of her few public appearances.

Ada was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 2004, and leaves behind her children, Nick and Allison Zeidler Herolaga, her parents, and her brother George.

A funeral will be held on December 22 in Augusta. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Knoedler Memorial Library in Ada’s hometown — a touching nod to her lifelong love of books and art.
