A vacation trip turned into a nightmare when a bus packed with tourists plunged more than 230 feet into a deep gorge in northern India — killing at least five people and leaving others seriously injured.
The tragedy struck Monday in the hilly Tehri district of Uttarakhand, a popular travel destination known for its steep, winding roads. Authorities said the bus, carrying roughly 28 passengers, veered off the Kunjapuri–Hindolakhal route before tumbling into the ravine.
Emergency teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the scene and scrambled down the slope in a desperate effort to save lives. Survivors were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to nearby hospitals as officials confirmed multiple fatalities at the scene.
Photos released by rescue teams show the mangled white bus lying on its side at the bottom of the gorge, surrounded by responders and rescue ropes. Officials say many passengers were likely tourists from outside the region, and efforts are ongoing to identify victims and contact their families.
Authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the deadly plunge, though early reports suggest the driver may have lost control on a dangerous mountain curve.
The crash adds to a grim series of recent bus disasters across India. Just last month, 25 people were killed after a motorbike slammed into a private bus in Andhra Pradesh, sparking a massive fire. In 2024, a similar incident in Rajasthan’s Sikar district left 12 dead after a bus slammed into a concrete tunnel.
This latest crash has once again raised questions about India’s road safety crisis — especially on steep, narrow mountain highways where accidents are tragically common.
More updates are expected as the rescue and recovery efforts continue.
