Christmas cheer came early for families at Florida’s Tyndall Air Force Base — until a real-life Grinch swooped in to ruin it.
Military families excited to deck the halls were ordered this week to take down their festive lights and garlands after a stern email from their housing company demanded “One Holiday At A Time.”
The message told residents that Yuletide décor “should be reflective in their respective months and not any sooner than 30 days before the given holiday.” Translation: no Santa, no lights, no joy — not yet.
The crackdown came from Balfour Beatty Communities, the private company that manages housing on the base. Public Affairs Chief Justin Davidson-Beebe confirmed the order wasn’t from the Air Force itself, saying the company was simply enforcing the “community standards” that everyone signed in their leases.
Those standards, apparently, allow holiday lights only from the week after Thanksgiving through the third week of January — and even then, only during specific hours. No all-night twinkling permitted.
When the rules hit an unofficial Air Force Facebook group, outrage exploded. Troops and families blasted the landlord as a “Grinch” and a “Scrooge McCommander.” One user joked, “It’s common knowledge Christmas starts on July 5th.” Another quipped, “The Grinch is running housing at Tyndall?”
Balfour Beatty Communities defended the policy, saying it’s “common practice” in rental neighborhoods and helps keep things “neat and consistent.” But not everyone’s buying it. “That’s nuts,” one military spouse fumed, adding that at Fort Hood, “my outdoor décor went up November 1st and half our street followed suit.”
Still, some clever residents are looking for loopholes. “It doesn’t say we can’t display decorations,” one user noted. “It just says we can’t light them up.”
Looks like the war on Christmas might’ve found its latest battleground — and it’s happening in base housing.

How many troops will get sent off before Christmas and families want to celebrate while they can? Geez, HOA Karen, just get off your horse and stay home.
