Baseball fans are mourning the loss of Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell, who passed away this week at age 62 after a battle with medullary thyroid cancer.

Greenwell, a fan favorite who spent his entire 12-year MLB career with the Red Sox, went public with his diagnosis in August. Known affectionately as “The Gator,” he played from 1985 to 1996 and was celebrated for his loyalty and heart — both on and off the field.

After hanging up his cleats, Greenwell turned to public service. In 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed him as a Lee County commissioner, where he earned a reputation for fighting hard for his community. “He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced,” county officials wrote in a touching Facebook tribute.

His son, Bo Greenwell, also shared an emotional message following his father’s passing:
“It has been a long year for him through a lot of pain and suffering. Now he can finally rest in peace. Thank you to everyone who has been keeping him in your thoughts and prayers.”

Mike Greenwell is survived by his wife, Tracy, and sons Bo and Garrett.
