A group of friends kayaking off Australia’s northern beaches got the scare of their lives when a massive 16-foot great white shark circled them for 15 nail-biting minutes.

The kayakers said they’d already had a run-in with a different great white just days earlier — and couldn’t believe their bad luck when another shark appeared. “I just said, ‘oh, not again,’” one of them told 9 News Australia.

The group quickly huddled together as the predator made pass after pass, refusing to leave. Authorities rushed to the scene with a boat and helicopter, finally scaring the shark off with engine noise. The kayakers were escorted back to shore, shaken but unharmed — and with a story they’ll probably be telling forever.

Rescuers later confirmed the shark was tagged, and nearby Hillarys Dog Beach has since been closed after 11 shark sightings in the area since Saturday. Experts warn that small vessels like kayaks are still at risk, as shark encounters in the region have turned dangerous in the past.

Would you still get in a kayak after this?
