Ben Griffin’s BMW Championship final round turned into a viral spectacle for all the wrong reasons after what he called an accidental “creatine overdose” sent his opening holes spiraling into chaos.
The 29-year-old PGA Tour pro stunned fans when he four-putted from just four feet on the very first hole, then blasted his next tee shot out of bounds. Clips of the meltdown spread quickly across social media.

Griffin later explained that the bizarre start wasn’t about nerves but a supplement gone wrong. He said he had scooped out a hardened “snowball” of creatine, broke it into chunks, and tossed it into his water bottle right before teeing off. When he swallowed a big piece without enough water, he suddenly felt shaky and jittery.
“I’ve never overdosed on creatine before, but in that moment it felt like I did,” Griffin admitted. “I started getting tremors and didn’t know what to do. Thankfully my caddie made me chug water and calm down.”
Despite the disastrous beginning — a triple bogey followed by a double — Griffin quickly recovered. He went on a hot streak with seven birdies over his final 12 holes at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland, ultimately finishing tied for 12th.
It’s been a breakout year for Griffin, who already has two tour wins under his belt and sits ninth in the Ryder Cup standings, putting him in strong contention for captain Keegan Bradley’s picks next month at Bethpage.
“I just had to shake it off and keep going,” Griffin said afterward. “It sucked in the moment, but by the third tee I felt fine.”
While Griffin was regaining control, Scottie Scheffler surged past Robert MacIntyre to win the tournament — his fifth title of the season. Both Scheffler and Griffin will move on to the Tour Championship at East Lake, where a $10 million prize awaits the winner.
