The saga of Charles, Diana, and Camilla has long been one of the most famous royal love triangles in history—filled with drama, heartbreak, and public intrigue worthy of any best-selling novel.

Though the world only learned of Charles and Camilla’s affair and the Prince and Princess of Wales’ troubled marriage in the early ’90s, insiders say the tension had been brewing for years behind palace walls.

Author Tom Bower, in his book Rebel King: The Making of a Monarch, shares a vivid story from 1989 that perfectly captures this simmering drama. The scene: a birthday party at Annabel Goldsmith’s London home. Camilla and her then-husband Andrew Parker Bowles were guests, as was Charles, accompanied by Diana—who arrived unexpectedly.

As soon as Diana walked in, the room went silent. She directly challenged Camilla to stay away from Charles. Camilla, managing to hold back her anger, shot back that Diana’s behavior was “unacceptable in a private house.”

Bower reveals how the tension escalated, with Camilla’s camp accusing Diana of creating a public scene, while others called Camilla “b***hy” for her response. The Princess was reportedly told by friends she was “working her way through the life guards,” implying her own complex relationships, making her less than innocent in the eyes of some.

By 1989, Charles and Camilla were spending more time together—even holidaying in Turkey alongside Camilla’s husband. Camilla was seen wearing a bracelet engraved with the initials “G” and “F,” their private nicknames for each other—Gladys and Fred.

Public revelations came later. Diana and Charles separated in 1992, the same year her authorized biography Diana: Her True Story first mentioned the affair. The scandal deepened in 1993 with the infamous “tampongate” tapes revealing intimate phone conversations between Charles and Camilla.

Bower writes that the public was divided on who to blame. Many sided with Diana, viewing her as innocent and vulnerable, while others painted her as manipulative, intent on damaging relationships—especially with Charles and his mother.

Meanwhile, Camilla faced criticism for never stepping aside to let Charles and Diana reconcile, instead pushing forward with her relationship.

Their tangled history goes back even further: Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973 after a secret family-arranged meeting to avoid complicating Charles’s future. Yet Charles and Camilla’s bond remained strong, rekindling their romance in 1980, even as Charles married Diana the following year.

Diana herself famously acknowledged the triangle, saying, “There were three of us in this marriage” during a 1995 BBC interview.

After Charles and Diana’s divorces, Charles and Camilla gradually made their relationship public, culminating in their 2005 wedding. Camilla chose not to take the Princess of Wales title out of respect for Diana, instead becoming the Duchess of Cornwall.

Public opinion slowly shifted thanks to a savvy PR campaign, especially following Diana’s tragic death in 1997. Charles’s team worked to restore his and Camilla’s image, and by the time Charles became King in 2022, Camilla was firmly accepted as Queen.

What started as whispered scandals and private confrontations, like that unforgettable birthday party showdown, has become one of the most enduring and complex love stories in royal history.
