A family-friendly weekend in England turned into a scene of horror when an 18-year-old girl suffered devastating injuries in a freak accident at a popular summer fair.
The incident unfolded around 10:53 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, during the Netley Marsh Steam & Craft Show in Hampshire, U.K.—an annual countryside fair known for its vintage machinery, steam engines, and traditional rides. But for one teenager, a night of fun became a life-altering nightmare.
According to eyewitnesses, the girl was inside a “fun house” attraction with a moving, oscillating floor when she lost her footing. As she fell, her long hair was violently sucked into the ride’s roller mechanism.
“I saw that three-quarters of her scalp had been ripped off,” said Emma Perry, a heart failure nurse who witnessed the horrifying aftermath. “It was a degloving injury. She was screaming. Her friend came running for help, saying she was bleeding. I cradled her head and just kept talking to her. She was clearly in shock.”
Perry said emergency responders were already at the scene, but parts of the ride had to be physically cut away to free the victim.
Local police confirmed the teen was rushed to the hospital with injuries described as “potentially life-changing.”
Freak Accident or Preventable Disaster?
Charles Cole, the owner of the fun fair operating at the event, called the incident a “freak accident,” claiming the ride had passed daily safety checks and operated without issues earlier that day.
“The ride is 20 years old, but it had been tested that morning,” Cole said. “Fifty people had been on it before her. Her hair got caught, and she couldn’t grab the handrails.”
He also noted the emotional toll on his team. “We’re a family-run business. Nobody wants to hurt anyone. Last night was very upsetting—especially for the man who owns the ride.”
Despite the severity of the accident, event organizers reopened the fair on Sunday morning and posted a message to Facebook assuring the public that the show would go on: “Despite what you may have read or seen online, we are open and look forward to seeing you all.”
That tone didn’t sit well with everyone. Locals and safety advocates are now questioning how an accident this gruesome could happen in a supposedly controlled environment.
“Was it really a freak accident, or was it negligence waiting to happen?” asked one fairgoer who chose not to return the following day.
Under Investigation
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has launched an investigation in partnership with the U.K.’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which oversees industrial and public safety.
Neither the police nor the event’s organizers have released the identity of the young woman, who remains hospitalized.
With the ride now shut down indefinitely and authorities combing through maintenance records and witness statements, the central question remains: Was this preventable?
For now, one family’s life has been permanently changed—and a quiet English fairground will never feel quite the same.
