First Pneumonic Plague Death in Coconino County in Nearly Two Decades Sparks Urgent Health Investigation

A man in Northern Arizona has died after showing up at a hospital emergency room with what turned out to be one of the most feared diseases in human history—the plague.

Northern Arizona Healthcare confirmed the patient walked into the Flagstaff Medical Center Emergency Department and died within hours. He had pneumonic plague, the deadliest and most contagious form of the ancient illness.

“This is a tragic and rare event,” a hospital spokesperson said. “Resuscitation efforts were made, but the patient could not be saved.”

Health officials have confirmed the diagnosis: Yersinia pestis, the bacterium behind both the medieval Black Death and modern-day plague infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pneumonic plague attacks the lungs and can spread through airborne droplets. It kills fast—and if left untreated, it’s almost always fatal.

A Fast and Brutal Decline

Authorities haven’t released the man’s name, age, or when exactly the death occurred, citing privacy concerns. What is known is that he was from Coconino County and appeared at the hospital with symptoms so severe he could not be saved—even with immediate medical intervention.

Pneumonic plague can develop after inhaling infected droplets or if untreated bubonic or septicemic plague spreads to the lungs. It typically causes symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and fever within just two to six days.

“This is the first confirmed death from pneumonic plague in our county since 2007,” said Patrice Horstman, Chair of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors. “Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”

A Region on Watch

Earlier in the week, officials had already been on alert after a mass die-off of prairie dogs in the Townsend-Winona area northeast of Flagstaff—a potential red flag for plague activity. While authorities insist the patient’s death is not directly linked to that incident, the timing has raised eyebrows.

“We are testing fleas collected from the area and treating burrows to reduce risk,” said Coconino County Health and Human Services in a statement.

Not Just a Disease of the Past

While “the plague” may sound like a relic of medieval Europe, the disease still lurks in the rural American West, especially in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. According to the CDC, an average of seven human cases of plague are reported in the U.S. annually. Though rare, it’s very real—and it’s deadly without fast treatment.

Most human infections come from flea bites or contact with infected animals like rodents, rabbits, or even domestic pets. Antibiotics can be highly effective, but only if administered early—something that didn’t happen in this case.

“This is a sobering reminder to take potential infectious diseases seriously,” a Flagstaff physician told local reporters. “If you’re sick—especially with a sudden fever, cough, or swollen lymph nodes—seek care immediately and tell your provider if you’ve been in contact with wild animals or rodents.”

The Investigation Continues

Northern Arizona Healthcare and county health officials are now coordinating with the Arizona Department of Health Services to track any potential exposures and ensure the public is safe. So far, no additional cases have been reported.

The hospital urged patients with contagious symptoms to request a mask immediately upon arrival at the ER.

“It helps protect everyone,” the hospital said. “We are committed to timely and safe care for all patients.”

Health officials are monitoring the prairie dog area and will continue testing for plague-related fleas.

For now, one thing is clear: plague is no longer a ghost from history—it’s alive and well in the American Southwest.

  1. Remember the democrats cronies in science where threaten to unleash this and everything else if President Trump became President. Just like Fauci talking about virus for President Trump in his first term. Doctors and others better beware of the mad scientist like Fauci. Democrats will do anything especially Soros, Gates and Fauci to ruin President Trump. Their lives depend on it. Money train destroyed and they promised they were ready with about a dozen things to kill the American population. Just recall all the rules during Covid were set for a reason. Mask mandates for example are still in play today with rioters. You have to get the vaccine to work or do anything yet millions of illegals crossed the boarder no problem. No funerals for family yet they held four day funeral for a criminal. No school for your children yet their private schools were in session. No vaccination yet elites went all over the world. No haircuts except for elites. You stay at home and lose your job while democrats enforced DEI. That went well also right. Democrats would rather kill us then look at us.
