In what feels like a scene straight out of Black Mirror, a tourist checking into a Tokyo hotel had a full-on meltdown — and the internet can’t get enough.
A TikTok video now racking up nearly 850,000 views shows an Argentinian traveler, who goes by @manuenalemania, visibly distressed as she’s greeted not by a friendly face, but by a pair of lifeless-eyed robots in white uniforms and pillbox hats at the front desk.

“The receptionists are robots!” she cries in Spanish, panning the camera toward the humanoid figures standing eerily still behind the counter. As one greets her in monotone Japanese-English, she recoils.
“Don’t look at me, don’t look at me, don’t look at me,” she pleads nervously as the machine welcomes her and wishes her a “delightful stay.”
Welcome to the Future — Or a High-Tech Horror Show
The unsettling encounter happened at the Henn na Hotel — which literally translates to “Strange Hotel” in Japanese. And it lives up to the name.
Located in Tokyo, the chain is famous for replacing almost all customer-facing staff with robotic counterparts. Depending on the branch, guests might be greeted by realistic humanoid androids… or even animatronic dinosaurs.
The brand made headlines when it launched in Nagasaki in 2015 as the “world’s first robot hotel,” promising speed, efficiency, and minimal human interaction. Now, there are over 20 locations across Japan.
These hotels feature robotic check-in counters, holographic concierges, and “RoBoHoN” assistants — pint-sized AI helpers capable of giving directions and weather updates.
But if you thought that sounds cool, TikTok user Manu’s experience suggests otherwise.
“You scare me a lot,” she tells the robot as she nervously scans her passport and punches in her dates. The machine then spits out her key card.
The robot finishes the exchange with a stiff bow and a final line: “Your check-in is now complete. We hope you have a delightful stay.”
Cue her scream: “¡Ay nooooooo!”
Online Reactions: From Laughter to Existential Dread
Viewers had mixed reactions.
“You study hospitality for this?” one user joked, slamming the rise of automation in service jobs.
Others compared the setup to a Twilight Zone episode or a bad dream. “This is how the robot uprising starts,” another commented.
But beneath the jokes, the awkward interaction spotlights a deeper issue.
Robots Aren’t Quite Ready to Run the Show
Despite its futuristic appeal, the Henn na Hotel hasn’t exactly delivered flawless automation. In fact, management quietly pulled the plug on more than half of its 240 robotic workers after years of complaints and mechanical failures.
According to a 2023 report from The Travel, guests said the robots were prone to freezing, misinterpreting commands, and sometimes even waking up guests by speaking in the middle of the night.
One hotel insider told Japanese media, “We were spending more time fixing the robots than helping guests.”
As a result, many locations have started rehiring human workers to fill in the gaps — a quiet admission that AI still can’t fully replicate human hospitality.
So, Should You Check In?
For adventurous travelers, the Henn na Hotel still offers a glimpse into the future of hospitality — even if that future is a little bumpy.
But if you’re not quite ready for a robot to scan your passport and wish you goodnight, it might be worth booking the old-fashioned way — with an actual person behind the desk.
