A quiet summer night on South Carolina’s coast turned deadly when gunfire shattered the boardwalk buzz at one of Myrtle Beach’s most beloved landmarks.
One man is dead, another is under arrest, and the community is left reeling after a shooting at the historic Peaches Corner diner late Friday night.
According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department, officers rushed to the popular beachfront eatery just after 11:15 p.m. on June 27 following reports of shots fired inside the establishment. When they arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds — one fatally injured.
Police confirmed the shooting stemmed from a heated confrontation between a restaurant employee and another individual, though the exact details remain unclear. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, citing the ongoing investigation and notification of next of kin.
“Officers responded within minutes and quickly secured the scene,” MBPD spokesperson Sgt. Daniel Roberts said Saturday. “We’ve arrested one individual in connection with the incident. At this point, we’re not confirming whether that person was the shooter or the employee.”
The second person wounded — whose injuries were described as non-life-threatening — was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Peaches Corner, located at 900 N. Ocean Boulevard, has stood as a Myrtle Beach staple since 1937. Known for its chili dogs, greasy burgers, and throwback diner vibe, it has drawn generations of locals and tourists alike to its neon-lit storefront just steps from the ocean.
“This place is an institution,” said longtime Myrtle Beach resident Judy Walker, 61, who was on the boardwalk at the time of the incident. “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. You never expect something like this to happen at Peaches.”
The restaurant’s Facebook page, typically filled with photos of sun-drenched families and banana splits, has gone dark since the incident. Calls to the diner on Saturday went unanswered.
Though Myrtle Beach is a popular vacation destination, the city has seen its share of violence, particularly in the summer months when tourism spikes. The Ocean Boulevard area — often packed with late-night crowds — has long been a hotspot for both celebration and confrontation.
“This is a tragic reminder that no place is immune,” said Councilman Derek Lyons, who represents the area. “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the boardwalk remains safe for families and visitors.”
As of Saturday evening, investigators were still piecing together what sparked the violence inside the diner. Security footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed, and witnesses are being interviewed.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Myrtle Beach Police at (843) 918-1382.
While details are still emerging, police have not ruled out additional arrests or charges. It remains unclear whether the shooting was in self-defense, work-related, or the result of a personal dispute.
“We ask the public to be patient and allow detectives to conduct a thorough investigation,” Sgt. Roberts added. “This is an active scene, and we’re working diligently to get answers.”
As the summer heat continues to swell along the South Carolina coast, Peaches Corner is now closed indefinitely — not for a renovation or holiday, but as the scene of a tragedy no one saw coming.
