In a startling confession rocking the world of Christian music, former Newsboys frontman Michael Tait has publicly admitted to drug addiction, alcoholism, and sexually inappropriate behavior toward men.

Tait, 59, shocked fans in January when he announced he was stepping down from the popular Christian rock band, citing a “monumental and heartfelt decision” on social media. Now, after allegations surfaced detailing disturbing incidents dating back nearly two decades, Tait is confronting his past openly.

On June 4, The Roys Report released a bombshell investigation that accused Tait of sexually assaulting three men between 2004 and 2014. The victims alleged Tait befriended them on Christian music tours before subjecting them to “unwanted sensual” advances.

In response, Tait shared a deeply personal statement titled “My Confession,” acknowledging the grim truth.

“For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol, and at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way,” Tait admitted candidly. “I am ashamed of my life choices and actions, and make no excuses for them.”

He labeled his actions clearly as “sin,” emphasizing personal accountability. “I don’t blame anyone or anything but myself.”

Tait also revealed that his January exit from Newsboys was driven by a desperate need for healing. “I was not healthy, physically or spiritually, and was tired of leading a double life,” he explained. His journey took him to a Utah treatment facility for six intense weeks—treatment he credits for saving him from total ruin.

“I have been clean and sober since,” Tait continued, “though I still have lots of hard work ahead of me.”

Newsboys, a staple in Christian music circles, expressed their devastation over the revelations. In a heartfelt Instagram statement, the band wrote, “Our hearts were shattered…We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry at this report and feel as if we have been deceived for the last fifteen years.”

Michael Tait also acknowledged the widespread damage caused by his behavior, expressing profound remorse.

“I have hurt so many people in so many ways, and I will live with that shameful reality the rest of my life,” he said. “I can only dream and pray for human forgiveness because I certainly don’t deserve it.”

Highlighting the spiritual stakes, he added, “It crushes me to think that someone would lose or choose not to pursue faith and trust in Jesus because I have been a horrible representative of Him.”

Concluding his confession, Tait vowed to continue his recovery away from public scrutiny. “I accept the consequences of my sin and am committed to repentance and healing—quietly and privately, away from the stage and the spotlight.”
