A growing firestorm erupted Thursday after Democratic Senator Alex Padilla was physically removed from a Homeland Security press conference—prompting backlash not only from the left, but a surprising rebuke from within his own party.

Democratic Congressman Jared Golden (D-ME) shocked fellow Democrats by calling the confrontation “politics as theater,” refusing to blindly defend Padilla’s actions after he clashed with law enforcement during an immigration press event held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles.

The Moment That Sparked a Political Brawl

Padilla, a California progressive, was dragged out by officers after loudly interrupting Noem’s remarks at the Los Angeles FBI Headquarters. He attempted to press her with questions about immigration enforcement—but video shows him getting pushed to the ground and cuffed after shouting and approaching the podium.

Despite Democratic leaders rushing to Padilla’s defense—Sen. Chuck Schumer said the scene made him “sick,” and Sen. Elizabeth Warren labeled it “horrifying”—Golden took a different approach.

Golden: ‘That’s Not What We’re Elected To Do’

“I don’t think politics as theater is what our job is here,” Golden told Axios from Capitol Hill. “It’s never good when a lawmaker gets roughed up. But storming into a federal press briefing, yelling over a Cabinet official? That’s not leadership—it’s performance.”

He added, “That’s not the way to get answers. It only undermines the public’s trust and escalates tensions.”

Golden, a moderate Democrat from a battleground district, is known for splitting with his party on high-profile votes. His public criticism puts added pressure on Padilla, who’s now facing questions about his behavior during the incident.

Noem Fires Back: ‘He Rushed the Podium’

Noem, who has been praised by conservatives for her hardline immigration stance, said Padilla never properly identified himself during the event and “elevated his voice” while approaching the podium.

“We were updating the public on major enforcement operations when this man burst into the room, disrupted the event, and had to be restrained,” Noem told Fox News. “We had no idea who he was at that moment, and he didn’t act like a senator. He acted like an activist.”

Video shows Padilla saying his name aloud—but he was not wearing any Senate identification, according to the FBI. The agency confirmed that Padilla was released after being positively identified and labeled him “disruptive.”

Democrats Push for Investigation—But Golden Stands Firm

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) has called for a full investigation, saying the footage was “disturbing.” But Golden remained unmoved.

“It’s clear this wasn’t an innocent misunderstanding,” Golden said. “We’ve got real work to do on immigration. Grandstanding doesn’t help anybody.”

As Noem continues to draw attention for her tough stance on border enforcement, some see the Padilla clash as a preview of bigger political battles to come—and a warning that not all Democrats are willing to back the theatrics.
