Explosive new audio recordings of Princess Diana are making waves, revealing private conversations in which the late royal claimed King Charles was “disappointed” when Prince Harry was born because he wanted a daughter.
The unreleased tapes—recorded by Diana in the early 1990s for her biographer Andrew Morton—will be featured in an upcoming documentary that promises an even more intimate look into the life of the Princess of Wales. The revelations surfaced just one day after the 26th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death and come ahead of the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
According to Diana, the now-King Charles made the comment during Harry’s 1984 christening, allegedly telling her stepmother Raine Spencer, “We’re so disappointed, we wanted a girl.” Diana claimed Raine didn’t hold back, responding sharply that Charles should be grateful for having a healthy child.
In the tapes, Diana recalled the moment vividly: “At Harry’s christening, Charles went up to mummy and said: ‘We’re so disappointed, we wanted a girl,’ and mummy snapped his head off and said you should realise you are lucky to have a child that’s normal. Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That’s what he does when somebody answers back.”
These newly released tapes follow the format of the 2017 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, which stunned audiences with never-before-heard confessions. The new production, set to premiere in 2024, is expected to unveil even more candid moments from the seven hours of audio Diana recorded.
Producer Tom Jennings told ABC the style of the documentary offers viewers a rare unfiltered view: “It’s the closest thing to the truth that you can get because nothing gets in your way.”
The tapes also shed light on Diana’s complicated relationship with her stepmother. In one emotional excerpt, she recalled a furious confrontation, saying, “I told her, ‘I hate you so much. You’ve ruined the house, you’ve spent Daddy’s money.’” She claimed Raine fired back, insisting Diana had no idea how much her own mother had hurt her father.
Diana’s recordings were the source material for Andrew Morton’s explosive 1992 book Diana: Her True Story, which at the time was criticized as tabloid fodder. What the public didn’t know was that the Princess herself had fed Morton the material directly.
Among her many confessions, Diana spoke about her deep emotional turmoil within the royal family—including her struggles with depression and suicide attempts.
The newest batch of recordings is reigniting public fascination with the royals, particularly the troubled marriage between Charles and Diana and the strained beginnings of Prince Harry’s royal journey.
Stay tuned—more bombshells could be on the way.

She did an interview back in the early 90s on one of the night-time news shows and she mentioned even then that Charles was “disappointed” that Harry wasn’t a girl. He was vocal about it, as they were standing there coming out of the hospital. He leaned over and made a comment about the baby being another boy. Oddly enough I mentioned this a few months back and people thought I was “nuts” and making it up. Nope, I wasn’t.
