A peaceful baby shower turned into pandemonium Sunday night when a brawl spilled out into the parking lot of a busy Broward County shopping plaza—followed by gunfire that left cars riddled with bullet holes.
What was supposed to be a celebration of new life nearly ended in tragedy.
Violence at Town Center Plaza
It all happened around 7:30 p.m. at Town Center Plaza off West Broward Boulevard. Fort Lauderdale police say they responded to reports of a “large fight” involving a crowd near a banquet hall—just hours after the baby shower guests had gathered there.
“By the time we arrived, most people were fleeing the scene,” said Fort Lauderdale Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Dana Alston. “Several vehicles were damaged by gunfire, and we’re fortunate no one was hit.”
Caught in the Crossfire
Nicolas Toussaint, who owns NG Shipping LLC in the same plaza, arrived Monday morning to find his property caught in the chaos.
“I came in and saw bullet holes in both my cars,” Toussaint told reporters. “I saw the baby shower when I left Sunday evening—never thought something like that would end in violence. It’s unbelievable.”
Standing next to his shot-up sedans, Toussaint shook his head in disbelief. “Thank God no one was sitting in those vehicles,” he said. “It could have been a whole different story.”
No Known Motive Yet, But Tensions Were High
Witnesses say tensions between two groups escalated during the baby shower, leading to shouting, punches, and eventually, gunfire. Police have not confirmed who fired the shots or whether the incident stemmed from personal grievances.
“This wasn’t a random act,” said Sgt. Alston. “There’s clearly more to this, and we’re working to identify all parties involved.”
Two Charged—For Now
So far, two men have been cited for disorderly conduct and released with a notice to appear in court. Police say more arrests could follow as they review surveillance footage and interview witnesses.
“We’re treating this as an ongoing investigation,” Alston added. “Discharging a firearm in a crowded plaza is no small offense. Someone’s baby could’ve been caught in the middle.”
Plaza Businesses Concerned
Local business owners are shaken.
“It makes you think twice about having events here,” said Kim Morales, who runs a nearby boutique. “One minute it’s a baby shower, the next it’s a crime scene.”
Several shopkeepers are now calling for increased security and better screening at the banquet venue, which has hosted community events for years without major incident—until now.
A Troubling Trend in Broward County
This isn’t the first time a celebration in South Florida has ended in violence. In recent years, Broward County has seen a string of family gatherings—from birthday parties to graduations—turn volatile.
“These events are meant to bring people together,” said community activist Leon Chambers. “Instead, we’re seeing more guns, more fights, and more trauma. Something has to change.”
Police Ask Public for Tips
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage to contact Fort Lauderdale PD.
“Even if you think it’s nothing, let us be the judge of that,” Sgt. Alston said.
Final Word
What began as a joyous afternoon ended with bullet-riddled cars, police sirens, and parents shielding children. It’s a reminder that even the most innocent celebrations can take a dark turn when violence walks through the door.
“It’s supposed to be about life,” Toussaint said. “Not about someone pulling a trigger.”
