A Southern California man with a passion for chameleons is facing serious charges after an out-of-control cross-country flight where he allegedly drank an entire bottle of Prosecco, slapped a flight attendant’s butt, and twice exposed himself to crew members.
Dennis Wally Woodbury, 49, was arrested after JetBlue Flight 201 from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles landed on April 13. According to a probable cause affidavit, things spiraled out of control fast once Woodbury, seated in the airline’s first-class “Mint” section, started drinking.
Before the plane even left the gate, Woodbury allegedly struck up a strange conversation with a flight attendant, showing off a photo of a dog — but in the background, there appeared to be two men engaged in a sex act. When the flight attendant reacted in shock, Woodbury laughed and joked about it, then tried to invite him on a cruise.
Once the plane was finally airborne, Woodbury didn’t slow down. He drained a full 750ml bottle of Prosecco in about three hours. Things escalated when he started slurring his words, rambling, and eventually slapped the lead flight attendant, yelling, “I love you” in front of other passengers and crew.
But that wasn’t the worst of it. According to the affidavit, Woodbury later pulled down his pants and exposed himself to another crew member — not once, but twice — after being refused more alcohol. The crew ended up switching assignments to avoid dealing with him, and Woodbury eventually passed out for the rest of the six-hour flight.
Police met the plane at Los Angeles International Airport. As officers led Woodbury off the aircraft, he bizarrely blamed the crew, shouting, “This is all your fault because you didn’t go to the bathroom with me!”
The FBI was brought in since the incident happened midair. During questioning, Woodbury reportedly interrupted the reading of his rights and insisted the flight attendants had “solicited” him — though he didn’t explain exactly what he meant by that.
Woodbury, who is well-known in online communities for breeding and raising chameleons, was released on a $50,000 bond partially secured by his sister, a firefighter in South Carolina. Court records also show his online activity includes posts about cruises, where he previously complained about beverage packages on Virgin Voyages ships.
He’s now facing a federal charge of abusive sexual contact within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States. If convicted, he could spend up to two years behind bars. In the meantime, a judge has ordered him to surrender his passport, stay sober, and enroll in a residential alcohol treatment program.
Woodbury is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on May 6. Calls and texts to him, his public defender, and JetBlue weren’t returned over the weekend.
