American Idol is hitting a rough patch just weeks into its 23rd season, with ratings slipping fast.
The show, which kicked off March 2 right after the Oscars, had a solid start, pulling in 5.95 million viewers for its premiere. But things took a turn by the time the Easter Gospel special aired on April 20 — audience numbers had dropped sharply.
Network data shows only 4.4 million people tuned in for the three-hour Gospel-themed episode, and the following night’s Top 14 reveal did even worse, attracting just 4.1 million viewers. That’s nearly a 2 million viewer drop compared to the season premiere.
One major change between those episodes was the swap of judges: Carrie Underwood filled in for Katy Perry during the Gospel special. The faith-based theme, a first for American Idol, didn’t land the same way for everyone watching — or working behind the scenes.
“It’s the first time they’ve done a faith-based episode and the crew was polarized by it,” a production insider told The U.S. Sun. “Some didn’t think it was completely appropriate but felt uncomfortable speaking up, while others saw no problem since it wasn’t tied to one religion.”
According to the source, country superstar Carrie Underwood was a major force behind the special, pushing hard to make it happen.
“She pushed to make this night happen,” the insider added.
With the show struggling to keep its audience, it remains to be seen if American Idol can turn things around before the season wraps.
