A terrifying home invasion and kidnapping has rocked Ecuador’s soccer community. Jackson Rodríguez, a defender for the Emelec football club, is reeling after armed men stormed his home in Guayaquil early Wednesday morning and kidnapped his wife and 5-year-old child while he hid under a bed to avoid capture.

According to police, the break-in occurred around 3 a.m. in one of Ecuador’s most violent cities. Rodríguez, 26, told investigators he went into hiding as soon as he heard the front door being forced open. The intruders demanded to know if the soccer star was home before abducting his wife and child when they couldn’t find him.

Ecuadorian authorities said Rodríguez spotted the kidnappers fleeing in a gray double-cab pickup truck. Police believe the attack was targeted.

The horrifying incident unfolded just 10 days after the Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency in several provinces, including Guayas, where Guayaquil is located. The decree was issued to ramp up security forces in response to escalating violence tied to powerful organized crime groups.

Crime in Ecuador has surged over the past four years, and 2025 is already shaping up to be one of the most violent years on record. Government data shows that between January and March alone, the country saw 2,345 violent deaths, with 742 of those in Guayaquil.

The city has become a major hub for drug trafficking, with cartels using its ports to ship narcotics to the U.S., Central America, and Europe. Authorities have repeatedly warned that athletes and public figures are increasingly becoming targets for these criminal organizations.

Rodríguez is not the only soccer player to fall victim. In December 2024, Pedro Perlaza, who played for Liga de Quito, was kidnapped in the city of Esmeraldas. He was rescued alive after several tense days.

The fate of Rodríguez’s family remains unknown at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

  1. This sickens me. Ecuador is one of my favorite countries in the world, so I hate to see this kind of violence there. Guayaquil is perhaps the roughest place in that nation. However, by USA standards it is not at all dangerous. I hope this is resolved quickly and peacefully.
