A terrifying scene erupted early Thursday morning at Toronto Pearson International Airport when a shooting near Terminal 1 led to chaos, lockdowns, and a flood of police activity, leaving one person presumed dead and travelers in shock.

Around 6:45 a.m., witnesses reported hearing as many as six gunshots and a scream near the departures area of Terminal 1. Shortly after, heavily armed officers swarmed the terminal, and passengers were seen fleeing in panic. According to multiple eyewitnesses, at least one person was seen receiving CPR on the ground outside.

Peel Regional Police later confirmed that a male victim had been shot in what they described as a targeted attack. “This is an isolated incident and there are no known threats to public safety,” police said in a statement. Despite the alarming early morning events, officials reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat at the airport.

Toronto Paramedics arrived shortly after the shooting was reported and said they were “actively responding” to the situation, though they did not provide specific details about the injuries or the status of the victim.

Social media quickly lit up with posts from passengers and bystanders who shared photos and videos of the chaos. One user on X (formerly Twitter), Catherine McDonald, reported, “One of my colleagues was at the airport and heard what sounded like six shots and a scream.” Another user, Andrew Collins, confirmed that someone was receiving CPR at the scene.

Eyewitnesses described a scene that resembled a war zone. John Fowler posted, “Dozen police cars & rifles out?” while another user estimated over 30 police vehicles had descended on the area. Footage shared by journalist Courtney Heels showed flashing police lights and stunned travelers standing outside their cars amid the lockdown.

Confused passengers were seen abandoning ride-shares and taxis in traffic, only to be stopped by police and rerouted. CP24 reported that officers began escorting stranded passengers through the congestion and into the terminal, even as much of the departure drop-off area remained closed to vehicles.

Meanwhile, regular service on the 900 Airport Express bus near Kipling Station has since resumed, according to the Toronto Transit Commission.

So far, authorities have not released the identity of the victim or any suspects. The investigation remains active, and police are continuing to interview witnesses and gather evidence from the scene.
