Tragedy struck during a British Airways stopover in San Francisco this week after a male flight attendant was found dead in his hotel room just hours before he was scheduled to work a return flight to London.

The crew member had arrived in California from the UK on Tuesday, April 16, and was staying at a hotel with fellow BA staff ahead of the long-haul flight back home. But when he failed to show up for his scheduled shift on Thursday, concern quickly spread among the crew.

After calls to his room went unanswered, hotel staff unlocked the door and discovered the man lifeless in bed. The flight—BA 284 from San Francisco to London Heathrow—was immediately canceled. According to reports, some of the shaken crew members were too distraught to continue, and pilots who had already arrived at the airport returned to the hotel to console their grieving colleagues.

Passengers waiting to board the Airbus A380, which can seat nearly 470 people, were told little about the reason for the sudden cancellation. They were offered hotel accommodations as the airline scrambled to make alternate arrangements. The return leg, BA 285 from London to San Francisco, was also scrapped the following day.

It’s not clear how long the crew member had been deceased before being found. Some insiders fear he may have gone unnoticed for up to 48 hours.

British Airways issued a short statement expressing their condolences:
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of our colleague at this difficult time.”

One source close to the crew told The Sun, “There was no way the flight could go on. Staff were in absolute bits. The steward was a popular member of the team. This hit everyone like a thunderbolt.”

Authorities in San Francisco are reportedly investigating the incident, though no foul play is suspected. BA and Marriott, where the crew was staying, have yet to release further details.

This is not the first time the airline has suffered a mid-trip tragedy. Just last year, a 47-year-old British Airways pilot died suddenly during a layover in St. Lucia. He collapsed at a luxury resort in front of stunned guests, forcing the airline to cancel the next day’s flight back to London.
