“They never had a chance,” says witness. Rail safety under fire after deadly strike by speeding train linked to delayed infrastructure upgrades.
In what locals are calling a “gut-wrenching disaster,” three family members were fatally struck by a high-speed Amtrak train Thursday evening in Bristol Borough, a quiet community just north of Philadelphia. The victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were reportedly on or near the tracks when they were hit by an Acela Express traveling over 100 mph.
Police Chief Joe Moors confirmed the tragic loss at a press briefing late Thursday. “This is a horrific tragedy. Three lives, gone in an instant,” he said. “It’s one of the worst scenes I’ve encountered in my time on the force.”
What Happened?
According to Moors, the incident occurred around 5:58 p.m. near Beaver and Prospect Streets, close to the local train station. Officers were dispatched following a report of “subjects up on the trains.”
“Just as our sergeants reached the tracks,” Moors recounted, “the Acela came barreling southbound and struck all three individuals. None of our officers were hurt, but they witnessed the aftermath firsthand. It was devastating.”
The train had originated in Boston and was headed toward Richmond, Virginia. Amtrak confirmed that the collision took place around 6:10 p.m. in coordination with federal rail authorities.
Eyewitness Account: “The Loudest Screech”
One shaken passenger on board, Ashley Spencer, described the chilling moment: “It was the loudest screech I’ve ever heard. Like metal grinding against metal… it sounded like the train was trying to stop, but it couldn’t.”
The train came to a halt several hundred feet beyond the impact zone. First responders arrived swiftly, but there was nothing they could do. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Rail Safety Concerns Mount
This incident has reignited criticism of Amtrak and federal transportation agencies for inadequate track security and poor fencing near urban stations, especially along high-speed corridors.
A retired engineer and local resident, Mike Carver, told local media, “This stretch has always been dangerous. We’ve had warnings for years. The government dumps billions into foreign aid, yet we can’t secure our own railways?”
Amtrak, which received billions in taxpayer funds under the Biden administration’s so-called ‘infrastructure bill,’ has struggled with service delays and safety incidents in recent years. Some critics argue the federal government’s priorities are misplaced.
Political Pressure Ahead?
With the 2024 elections behind us and President Trump vowing to ‘rebuild American infrastructure the right way,’ the Biden administration may soon face questions about where the money is really going.
“This is what happens when you ignore the basics,” said Rep. Tom Gallagher (R-PA). “People want safe communities, not flashy projects that benefit D.C. contractors. We need accountability.”
Travel Disruptions
Amtrak services between Philadelphia and New York were halted for several hours. Multiple trains were delayed or canceled Thursday night as authorities investigated.
By 10:47 p.m., service resumed, but Amtrak warned that all trains would operate at reduced speeds due to “residual delays.”
An Amtrak spokesperson said the company is cooperating fully with local police and federal investigators, though they declined to comment further on the safety of the track area.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not confirmed why the individuals were on the tracks. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed.
Chief Moors emphasized that the FBI and Amtrak Police are assisting, but ruled out foul play for now.
“We’re piecing everything together,” he said. “But at the end of the day, three lives were lost. That’s what matters right now.”

This is NO ONE’s fault other than the three people playing on the tracks. NO amount of safety measures can prevent this kind of thing. If the tallest free-standing wall in the country at the southern border can be breached by people climbing over it, then NO fence along the railways is going to stop anyone who is determined to take their lives in their hands by playing on the tracks. Kids have been taking chances playing around train tracks since trains first transversed the country in the 19th century and some have paid the ultimate price – like these did. Raising children to have a lot more common sense about taking their lives in their hands is the ONLY “safety measure” that will have any effect on reducing this type of tragedy.
We had tracks near my house when I gre up, Granted not the high speed ones of today, but there were trains– carried coal to the US Naval Academy power plant. We walked on the tracks all the time but could hear the train long before it got anywhere close and just got off the tracks to a safe distance.
Oh great blame Biden. Now we can have four more years of infrastructure weeks. tRump accomplished nothing, and you idiots re-elected him. Suffer the consequences.
