A family in Vista, California is demanding answers after their 9-year-old daughter tragically died just hours after what was supposed to be a routine dental procedure under general anesthesia.

The young girl, whose identity remains private out of respect for the grieving family, underwent surgery at Dreamtime Dentistry on March 18. According to initial reports, she appeared stable and alert when she was discharged. But by nightfall, she was gone.

Procedure Ends, Tragedy Begins

“She was monitored during the entire procedure. Her vitals were stable. She was alert when she left,” said Dr. Ryan Watkins in a written statement released through a public relations firm. Watkins is the licensed dentist and anesthesiologist who oversaw the operation.

The girl’s parents, thinking the worst was behind them, drove their daughter home. She reportedly fell asleep in the car. Later that evening, after being put to bed, she was found unresponsive.

Panicked, the family called 911. Paramedics rushed her to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, but despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead.

Investigation Underway, Questions Mount

The San Diego Police Department confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The San Diego County Medical Examiner has not yet determined an official cause, listing both cause and manner of death as “pending.”

While Dreamtime Dentistry emphasized that the girl was in stable condition at discharge, that statement has done little to calm public concern.

“The safety and well-being of our patients have always been and remain our highest priority,” said Watkins. “We ask for patience while the medical examiner completes their investigation.”

A Rare But Devastating Outcome

Though rare, deaths tied to pediatric anesthesia do occur — particularly when general anesthesia is involved. According to a 2023 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, complications from anesthesia in children happen in about 1 of every 10,000 cases. But even those odds are cold comfort to a family now mourning their child.

“She had anxiety about the procedure, so general anesthesia was recommended. We never imagined this would be the outcome,” a family friend told a local San Diego outlet under condition of anonymity.

A Record Without Incidents—Until Now

Dr. Watkins’ credentials are extensive. According to the clinic’s website, he has over 20 years of experience and is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. His statement stressed that no complications were observed during the procedure and that the child was monitored throughout.

But none of that explains what went wrong — or why a healthy child didn’t wake up.

Public Trust Shaken

This incident has rattled local families, many of whom trusted Dreamtime Dentistry for their own children’s care. “My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed there last year,” said Vista resident Emily Carter. “Now I’m terrified. We trust these clinics with our kids’ lives.”

As of now, Dreamtime Dentistry remains open for business. No formal accusations have been made, and no disciplinary actions have been announced. However, parents and lawmakers alike are beginning to ask whether oversight on pediatric sedation procedures is strict enough — especially in private clinics.

A Family in Mourning

The girl’s family has not spoken publicly, but sources say they are devastated and are cooperating with investigators.

Meanwhile, calls for more transparency and tighter regulations on pediatric dental anesthesia are growing louder.

“This shouldn’t happen in America,” said California State Assemblyman Kevin Byrne. “We need to get to the bottom of it, and we need to ensure it never happens again.”

The nation now waits for answers — and justice — as a heartbroken family prepares to bury their daughter.
