On Saturday night, in a moment that sent shockwaves through college wrestling, Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson stunned the nation with an underdog victory—and then made his allegiance crystal clear: he saluted President Donald Trump.
The upset of the decade
Hendrickson, a U.S. Air Force second lieutenant, delivered one of the most jaw-dropping upsets in NCAA wrestling history by toppling Gable Steveson—Minnesota’s 285-pound phenom who hadn’t lost a match since 2019.
Steveson, a two-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist, was riding a 70-match win streak. Many thought he was untouchable. But Hendrickson had other plans.
With 20 seconds left in the final period, Hendrickson charged forward like a man on a mission. He secured a critical takedown, and moments later, sealed the win with one more. The crowd in Philadelphia was left in stunned silence—quickly replaced by an eruption of disbelief.
A salute to Trump and a nod to faith
After the victory, Hendrickson was handed the American flag. But before his victory lap, he turned toward the stands, locked eyes with Trump, and delivered a sharp military salute. Trump returned the gesture, pumping his fist in approval. The two then shook hands and embraced—an image already going viral among conservative circles.
“It’s bigger than the Olympics, bigger than worlds—this was everything,” Hendrickson said after the match. “This was David versus Goliath. And I knew God had a hand in that final push.”
Faith, focus, and a fighter’s mindset
Speaking to reporters, Hendrickson credited his win to faith, preparation, and mindset.
“Before the tournament, our team doctor brought us to Life Church,” Hendrickson explained. “The sermon was about David and Goliath—and that’s what I carried with me. Everyone counted me out. But I believed. You have to see the victory before you step on the mat.”
He admitted it wasn’t easy. “He took me down once. But I took him down when it mattered. I wrestled like a champion because I believed I was one.”
Military man first, athlete second
While most see Hendrickson as a rising sports star, he’s focused on a much bigger mission—serving his country.
Currently part of the Air Force’s elite World Class Athlete Program, Hendrickson is also an acquisitions officer. But his long-term goal? A full 20-year career in the U.S. military.
“I chose the Air Force Academy because I wanted to serve,” he said. “This wasn’t just about wrestling. I looked at the long game—career goals, life goals. I could achieve all of that through the military.”
Asked about his future, Hendrickson made it clear. “Three more years wrestling, then I’m all in. I plan on staying in for 20. Serving this country is what I signed up for.”
An American story
Wyatt Hendrickson’s victory was more than a sports moment—it was a statement.
A young American warrior, standing tall on the national stage, beating the odds, honoring God, and saluting the President.
In a time when patriotism is often pushed to the margins, Hendrickson put it front and center.
And as President Trump looked on with pride, the crowd didn’t just witness an upset—they witnessed a new kind of champion.
One who fights with faith, honor, and an unshakable belief in America.
