In a remarkable turnaround, former Gambino crime family enforcer John Alite took the oath of office Wednesday as the newest member of Englishtown’s Borough Council, pledging to use his troubled past as fuel for positive change.

“I’ve made plenty of mistakes. I’ve seen violence, and I lived it,” Alite, 62, told the crowd gathered for his swearing-in ceremony. “Now, I’m committed to making things right—redeeming myself by serving my community.”

Alite, once a trusted associate of infamous mob boss John “Teflon Don” Gotti, served 14 years in federal prison for crimes including murder and assault. His notorious criminal record includes involvement in six murders, nearly 40 shootings, and numerous violent altercations during the 1980s and ’90s. Yet today, he insists he’s a changed man.

“Politics isn’t that different from the street—it’s about loyalty, knowing who to trust, and staying ahead of your opponents,” Alite explained candidly. “I understand power dynamics. I plan to use that knowledge to help the residents here, rather than hurt them.”

Alite didn’t face a traditional election battle. He was appointed by Mayor Daniel Francisco and local Republican leaders, who praised his extensive community outreach and efforts to steer youth away from drugs and crime.

“There were skeptics at first—people wondered if I could be trusted,” Alite admitted openly. “But I’m not hiding from my past. I’m using it to connect with kids, to help them avoid the mistakes I made.”

Mayor Francisco was quick to back the unusual appointment. “I judge a man by his actions today, not yesterday,” Francisco told reporters. “John has shown genuine commitment to improving Englishtown. He deserves a fair shot.”

The former mob enforcer, who now tours the country as a motivational speaker tackling issues like drug addiction and bullying, said personal tragedy profoundly shaped his political ambitions. Three years ago, his daughter Chelsea died from a fentanyl overdose—a heartbreaking event that pushed him to become an outspoken advocate against illegal drugs.

“The drug epidemic is destroying families in Monmouth County,” Alite emphasized. “I lost a daughter to it, and I’m determined no other parent goes through that.”

Alite, who openly models his political style after former President Donald Trump—someone he’s supported since 2016—expressed ambitions to eventually run for Congress. Public records indicate he’s contributed thousands to Trump’s campaigns and other Republican causes since 2020.

“President Trump isn’t a typical politician. He’s results-oriented, and that’s exactly what I admire,” Alite noted. “We don’t need more polished speeches; we need action.”

Though critics remain wary, Alite confidently predicts his background, public profile, and blunt communication style will discourage electoral challenges. He even took aim at Democrats currently in Congress, calling out lawmakers such as Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) as examples of ineffective leadership.

“Some of these Democrat politicians sound unprepared and out of touch,” Alite argued bluntly. “I may not be polished, but I know exactly what the real world is about.”

As for his previous life, Alite knows reconciliation with old associates is unlikely—particularly with John Gotti Jr., whom Alite testified against in 2008. But he’s focused firmly forward.

“Junior will never forgive me, and that’s his choice,” Alite said. “I’ve moved past that chapter. My loyalty now is to Englishtown, to the kids here, and to building something better.”

His vision for the town includes revitalizing its modest downtown district, improving local infrastructure, and enhancing programs aimed at youth development.

“This is America, a country of second chances,” Alite concluded firmly. “If someone like me can change, anyone can. I’m here to prove that redemption isn’t just talk—it’s possible.”

  1. Hey why not! Washington DC had a Mayor that was 3 time convicted felon and served time in prison!

  2. He will feel right at home. He is a crook and will be surrounded by bigger crooks. Right at home.
