The Prince and Princess of Wales make an unexpected entrance as they travel to Pontypridd by rail, embracing local traditions ahead of St. David’s Day.
Welsh commuters were in for a regal surprise when Prince William and Kate Middleton boarded a train to Pontypridd on Wednesday. The couple, who typically travel via motorcade or helicopter for official engagements, opted for a more down-to-earth approach as they arrived ahead of Wales’ national holiday, St. David’s Day, on March 1.
Dressed in a striking red coat—symbolizing one of the colors of the Welsh flag—Kate turned and waved to stunned onlookers who hastily reached for their phones to capture the rare moment.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. You never expect to see royalty just casually walking past you on the train platform,” said commuter Gareth Evans, 57, from Cardiff. “It really shows they’re making an effort to connect with everyday people.”
This is not the first time the royal couple has opted for public transportation. In May 2023, they made headlines after encountering popular train enthusiast Francis Bourgeois on London’s Elizabeth Line. William and Kate greeted the social media star with a friendly handshake and a lighthearted “Cheerio!” before continuing their journey.
Despite their access to private flights and royal transport, the Prince and Princess of Wales have occasionally chosen commercial travel, such as their 2022 flight to Boston for the Earthshot Prize awards. These moments signal a modern, relatable touch to their royal duties.
Upon arrival in Pontypridd, the couple delved into local culture by learning how to make traditional Welsh cakes at The Welsh Cake Shop. Business owner Theresa Conner, whose bakery has been a staple in the community for over a decade, was honored by their visit.
“It’s been a tough few months since the storms hit, and having William and Kate here means a lot to us,” Conner said. “It brings attention to what small businesses in Wales are going through.”
Pontypridd suffered significant damage from Storm Bert and Storm Darragh late last year, leaving many families and businesses struggling to recover. The couple’s visit shined a spotlight on the resilience of the town and the ongoing efforts to rebuild.
The trip marks the second official engagement of the year for the Prince and Princess of Wales. Their previous appearance was at a Holocaust Memorial Day service in London on January 27. Kate’s presence has been particularly notable, as she recently returned to royal engagements after announcing her remission from cancer earlier this year.
As the couple continues to embrace their roles with a hands-on approach, their latest outing in Wales exemplifies a commitment to tradition, community, and accessibility—qualities that continue to endear them to the public.
