Retired Milwaukee detective Dennis Murphy—who once handled Jeffrey Dahmer’s chilling confession where Dahmer recounted eating human organs—is now warning Connecticut authorities about the dangerous decision to grant conditional release to convicted cannibal Tyree Smith.
Murphy recalls visiting Dahmer in a Wisconsin prison after his 1992 conviction for serial murder. During that visit, Dahmer ominously admitted that if ever freed, he’d return to his gruesome ways. “That’s exactly why Tyree Smith should never see the light of day,” Murphy asserts. According to him, releasing Smith would not only risk a return to violent behavior but would also reopen deep wounds for the victim’s families.
In 2011, Smith brutally hacked Angel Gonzalez to death in Bridgeport. Disturbingly, he later confessed to a cousin that he had consumed a portion of Gonzalez’s brain and even an eyeball—washing it all down with sake. Found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2012, Smith was sentenced to 60 years in a high-security forensic hospital.
Despite his violent past, the Connecticut Psychiatric Security Review Board recently granted Smith a conditional release. After a psychiatric evaluation deemed his schizophrenia in full remission—and his alcohol and drug issues managed through ongoing treatment—Smith is set to leave the confines of the high-security hospital. Under the board’s decision, he will be moved to a community facility with 24/7 supervision.
Detective Murphy remains deeply concerned. He warns that even with treatment, mentally unstable individuals can stop taking their medication for various reasons, potentially triggering a violent relapse. “We cannot afford to take this risk,” he insists, emphasizing that releasing Smith is like opening the door to a nightmare scenario reminiscent of Dahmer’s reign of terror.
As Connecticut braces for the fallout of this controversial decision, many are left questioning whether the safety of the community and the memory of the victims should come before any notion of rehabilitation.

Dahmers father regretted not getting his son committed. This man should not be released.
Maybe a family member of Angel will welcome him out.
