Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is making it clear—his wife, Casey DeSantis, has no plans to take over when his term ends in 2026. While many Republican voters admire the First Lady of Florida, DeSantis says the idea of her running is just speculation.

“She’s not seeking it,” DeSantis told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham. “I think people are just concerned about the future of the state. But this isn’t new—people have been asking her to run for a long time.”

That speculation has been fueled by her rising popularity. A 2024 poll from Florida Atlantic University and Mainstreet Research showed 38% of Republican voters would support Casey DeSantis in a primary.

A Conservative Favorite
Casey DeSantis has become a political force in her own right. A former television host, she has played a key role in her husband’s administration, championing mental health initiatives, education reform, and support for Florida families. Her battle with breast cancer—and her recovery—only added to her inspirational image among conservatives.

But running for office? She says no.

“That is a very humbling thing,” Casey DeSantis told Conservative Review in 2024. “But when people talk about me running for governor, I think it just speaks to how much they appreciate what Governor DeSantis has done for Florida.”

She also dismissed the idea in a past Newsweek interview, saying she has no interest in the “political thicket” after seeing firsthand what her husband has dealt with.

Who’s Actually Running?
While Casey DeSantis may not be in the race, the battle for Florida’s top job is already heating up.

Current contenders include Rep. Byron Donalds, a staunch Trump ally and favorite among the GOP’s conservative wing, and Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat with strong bipartisan appeal. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson is also rumored to be considering a run.

For now, though, DeSantis is focused on finishing his term. And as for Casey? She’ll continue her work behind the scenes, not on the ballot.

“She’s a great wife, a great mother, and one of the few people who might be even more conservative than me,” DeSantis joked.
