Beijing is lashing out as President Donald Trump’s new tariffs take effect Tuesday, warning of retaliatory actions against the U.S. The move comes as the Trump administration imposes a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, alongside a 25% tariff hike on Canada and Mexico.

The White House announced Saturday that these tariffs aim to hold these nations accountable for failing to curb illegal immigration and stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. “China has refused to take decisive action against the production of precursor chemicals fueling the fentanyl crisis, and that ends now,” a senior administration official stated.

Trump, a longtime critic of China’s trade practices, has repeatedly slammed Beijing for its role in the opioid epidemic devastating American communities. “China has been sending poison into our country for years while getting rich off the backs of American workers,” Trump declared at a rally in Pennsylvania. “We’re finally putting America first, and they don’t like it.”

China’s Foreign Ministry lashed out on Sunday, claiming the tariffs were an excuse to pressure Beijing. “China firmly deplores and opposes this move and will take necessary countermeasures,” a spokesperson warned. “Trade wars have no winners.”

Chinese officials attempted to shift blame, insisting that fentanyl is an “American problem.” A Foreign Ministry statement claimed, “China has been one of the toughest nations on counternarcotics. The U.S. should solve its own issues instead of using tariffs to bully other countries.”

The Chinese Communist Party’s state-run media doubled down, with Xinhua News blasting the tariffs as “reckless economic warfare” and accusing Trump of “sabotaging” global markets.

Republican lawmakers backed the president’s tough stance, calling out China’s hypocrisy. “For years, they’ve exploited our economy while turning a blind eye to fentanyl smuggling. This is about protecting American jobs and American lives,” Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) said.

Economic experts argue that China has long manipulated trade, and Trump’s tariffs are a long-overdue correction. “Beijing enjoys the benefits of open trade while engaging in unfair practices and failing to stop illicit drug trafficking,” said economist Stephen Moore. “Trump is finally standing up to them.”

The crisis is undeniable—fentanyl killed an estimated 70,000 Americans last year. While China claims cooperation, U.S. officials say their actions have been lackluster. “They promised to crack down back in 2019. Look where we are now,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram.

Former Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro dismissed China’s complaints. “China is playing the victim while they flood our streets with deadly drugs and steal our jobs. This administration won’t back down.”

As China threatens countermeasures, Trump remains defiant. “If they want a trade war, they’ve got one,” he said. “America will win.”

With Beijing on edge and Trump doubling down, the battle over tariffs and fentanyl is far from over. The question remains—will China back down, or will this escalate further? One thing is clear: Trump isn’t blinking.
