The FDA has escalated a recall on Walmart’s Marketside Broccoli Florets to its highest threat level, warning Americans that the product could cause serious illness or even death.

The recall, first issued by Braga Fresh on December 27, has now been upgraded to a Class I recall—reserved for the most severe public health threats. According to the FDA, Class I recalls indicate a “reasonable probability” that consuming the product “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

What You Need to Know

  • Product: 12oz Marketside Broccoli Florets
  • Retailer: Walmart
  • UPC Code: 6 81131 32884 5
  • Best-By Date: December 10, 2024
  • Affected States: 20 total, including Texas, Arizona, and Ohio

Potentially Lethal Listeria Risk

The broccoli recall stems from a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes, a deadly bacterium. Texas Health & Human Services discovered the contamination during routine sampling at a Walmart store in Texas.

Though no illnesses have been reported yet, listeria can be fatal, particularly for pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The FDA warns that symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, and diarrhea. For pregnant women, infection can result in miscarriage or stillbirth.

Braga Fresh and Walmart Respond

Braga Fresh insists that the broccoli in question is no longer available for purchase, stating, “All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and no longer for sale.”

However, consumers who may have frozen the product for later use are still at risk. Walmart issued its own statement urging customers to “check their freezers and discard the product immediately.”

A Troubling Pattern?

Some conservatives argue that federal agencies are failing to prevent food safety threats before they reach consumers. Former USDA official Mark Reynolds noted, “We’ve seen multiple food recalls just in the last few months—this is unacceptable. Why does it always take an outbreak or a random test to find the problem?”

The recall also raises questions about the oversight of major retailers like Walmart. “They control such a massive portion of the grocery market,” said consumer advocate Lisa Bennett. “Shouldn’t they have stronger safeguards in place?”

What You Should Do

  • Check your freezer: If you have this broccoli, do not eat it.
  • Dispose of it immediately and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.
  • Monitor for symptoms if you believe you’ve consumed the recalled product.

This is not the first major recall in recent months—just last week, a frozen meal sold at ALDI was recalled across 31 states due to metal contamination. Many Americans are wondering: When will these food safety failures stop?
