A self-proclaimed Céline Dion fan faced a moment of irony on national television, leaving Jeopardy! fans chuckling during Friday night’s 2025 Champions Wildcard tournament. Drew Goins, a Hawaii-based journalist, proudly declared his admiration for the iconic singer at the start of the game. Yet, he found himself stumped when asked about one of her hit songs.
The pivotal moment came with a $2,000 clue under the category “’90s No. 1 Hits”: “Sharing its title with an earlier, more upbeat Huey Lewis hit, it was No. 1 for Céline Dion in 1994.”
None of the contestants buzzed in. Goins, visibly flustered, drew laughter as he pretended to walk off stage. Moments later, he returned, hugged a fellow contestant, and resumed the game with good humor.
Host Ken Jennings added to the playful atmosphere. “Oh, she’s going to be mad, Drew,” he quipped, referring to Dion herself. Jennings later revealed the answer: “Like Huey Lewis, Céline Dion sang a song called ‘The Power of Love.’”
Goins’ lighthearted excuse? “I was born in 1994!” he said with a laugh, earning applause from the audience.
A Contestant Fans Love
Goins didn’t let the moment define him. He finished the game in second place, walking away with a $40,000 prize. Jeopardy!’s official Instagram page joined in on the fun, posting: “Here’s hoping Drew’s heart will go on,” a playful nod to Dion’s iconic ballad.
Fans of the show also expressed their support online:
- “This was the funniest Jeopardy moment,” one commenter wrote. “Drew is/was an awesome contestant.”
- “Well, now he has to come back to make it up to Céline. Love Drew!” added another.
Céline Dion: A 90s Powerhouse
The missed question underscores Céline Dion’s lasting impact on music. “The Power of Love,” originally performed by Jennifer Rush in 1984, became a signature hit for Dion in 1994, topping charts worldwide. Known for her powerhouse vocals and emotional delivery, Dion’s influence remains strong decades later. Her hits like “My Heart Will Go On” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” are timeless classics.
Jeopardy!: A Stage for Unexpected Drama
Friday’s episode is just the latest in a series of memorable Jeopardy! moments. The long-running quiz show has a history of blending intellectual rigor with lighthearted entertainment. For Goins, the experience was both humbling and exhilarating. “I had a blast,” he shared in a post-show interview. “And hey, at least I got a good story out of it.”
