In a fiery interview on Face the Nation Sunday, Vice President JD Vance challenged the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) over their condemnation of the administration’s immigration policies. The bishops recently described President Trump’s executive orders, including church raids targeting undocumented immigrants, as “deeply troubling” and harmful to vulnerable populations.

Speaking to moderator Margaret Brennan, Vance, a convert to Catholicism, didn’t mince words. “The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops needs to take a hard look in the mirror,” he said. “When they’re taking in over $100 million to resettle illegal immigrants, is their motivation truly humanitarian, or are they prioritizing their bottom line?”

Faith vs. Policy

The USCCB has been vocal in its criticism of the administration’s immigration measures. On Wednesday, they issued a statement decrying raids on places of worship and schools, calling such actions antithetical to Catholic teachings of compassion and mercy.

Brennan pressed Vance: “Do you support raids in churches or schools? Is that consistent with your faith?”

Vance stood firm, framing the issue as one of law and order. “I support enforcing the law wherever it’s necessary to protect Americans,” he said. “Churches and schools cannot be sanctuaries for those who break the law. That’s not what the American people voted for.”

A Devout but Unyielding Voice

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, framed his critique as one rooted in faith. “As a practicing Catholic, I’m heartbroken by the stance the bishops have taken. Their opposition to common-sense enforcement undermines both faith and public safety,” he said.

This tension highlights a growing rift between conservative Catholic leaders like Vance and the church’s broader leadership. Vance argued that the bishops’ criticism reflects a deeper problem within the institution. “Are they defending religious values or just playing politics? That’s the question Catholics need to ask.”

Broader Religious Pushback

The Trump administration’s tough stance on undocumented immigrants has drawn ire from various faith communities. Last week, Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde delivered an emotional plea during a sermon attended by the Trumps and Vances. “Show mercy to those in our communities,” she urged, citing the fear gripping families worried about deportation.

President Trump responded harshly, calling Budde a “radical left hard-liner” on Truth Social. Vance, however, sidestepped those attacks, keeping his focus on the bishops. “I respect the church’s role in guiding moral discussions,” he said. “But they’ve lost their way here. It’s time for them to align with the needs and values of the American people.”

The Path Forward

For many older Catholics, Vance’s stance may resonate. His message combines respect for religious tradition with a call for stronger enforcement of immigration laws—values that appeal to a Republican base seeking both moral clarity and national security.

“Faith and law are not in conflict,” Vance concluded. “If anything, enforcing the law is an act of faith—faith in our country, our values, and our people.”

Whether his critique will prompt the USCCB to reconsider its approach remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Vance is positioning himself as a staunch defender of both his faith and the administration’s hardline policies.

  1. The Bishop Budde is way off track here. It’s a sin to be involved in a homosexual union. She should never have been made a bishop. She is leading many straight to hell by condoning sin. Instead of loving sin, she is called, as a shepherd, to lead people to Christ, not to hell. Shame on her.

  2. The wrong people to give that kind of power to. this has nothing to do with the law it all has to do with how much power you gave to the wrong people in charge of our country now.

  3. I think she over stepped . She assumed President Trump was like the Demacrates or she didn\’t know anything about President Trump. For a religious person she grocely embarrassed her religion when she chastised the President without knowing him. She embarrassed me, being a religious person, she overstepped her authority as a woman of God by assuming President Trump was not. I was shocked at her remarks.

  4. Unfortunately there is so much misunderstanding, it seems about criminal illegal actions. The bishops need to focus on the reasons why people come to this country illegally instead of addressing the problems in the countries they come from. Legal immigration is not the problem!

  5. President Trump is Right. God made Two genders. One male The other Female. The Bishops should stop their sinning.

  6. I’m not happy with my Catholic Pope or the others. They haven’t been helping our LEGAL AMERICANS with their problems. What are they doing for those being drug addicted and fed FENTANYL???? MY SON JUST DIED FRIM THAT AND THE Catholic church doesn’t care

  7. The church ⛪️, will always be the church ⛪️. We will never change that, thank GOD.
