Jeff Baena, celebrated filmmaker and husband of actor Aubrey Plaza, was discovered deceased in their Los Angeles home Friday morning. His assistant found him unresponsive around 10:30 a.m., according to law enforcement officials. Authorities have indicated that the 47-year-old’s death appears to be a suicide.
Emergency responders pronounced Baena dead at the scene. The assistant’s call for help has prompted an investigation, but no foul play is suspected, a police spokesperson confirmed.
Baena was widely recognized for his unique approach to filmmaking, crafting darkly comedic narratives in films such as Life After Beth and The Little Hours. His works often combined absurd humor with heartfelt moments, earning him a devoted audience.
Baena and Plaza’s relationship, which spanned over a decade before their marriage in 2021, was a hallmark of Hollywood’s quieter love stories. Plaza revealed their marriage in a 2022 Instagram post promoting Baena’s film Spin Me Round, where she co-starred alongside Alison Brie.
“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble,” Plaza wrote in the post. Fans have since flocked to the comment section, leaving heartfelt condolences and messages of support for Plaza during this difficult time.
Many collaborators and friends of Baena have expressed their grief. “Jeff’s creativity and humor were unmatched,” said actor Alison Brie, who frequently worked with him. “He had a way of bringing out the best in everyone around him.”
Baena’s films often explored themes of human connection and resilience. Critics have noted how his offbeat style resonated with audiences seeking stories that embraced imperfections.
Aubrey Plaza has yet to release a public statement. The couple’s shared passion for storytelling and collaboration made them a beloved duo in the entertainment world. Plaza’s fans and colleagues have rallied to her side, offering an outpouring of sympathy.
