President Joe Biden is set to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to 19 individuals on Saturday, including polarizing figures like billionaire Democratic donor George Soros and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The decision has already sparked outrage among conservatives.
The Medal of Freedom is meant to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the nation. However, Biden’s picks include individuals accused of advancing divisive policies and agendas. “President Biden’s selections show his administration’s true priorities,” said a leading Republican lawmaker. “Rewarding partisanship and globalist agendas over true American values.”
At 94, Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros remains a lightning rod for controversy. Known for pouring over $175 million into Democratic campaigns during the 2022 midterms and another $60 million in 2024, Soros has used his immense wealth to fund far-left causes through his Democracy PAC and Open Society Foundations.
Critics claim his influence has undermined law enforcement, with Soros-backed district attorneys like Alvin Bragg of Manhattan and Larry Krasner of Philadelphia accused of prioritizing criminal justice reform over public safety.
Soros’ support for groups promoting anti-Israel protests on college campuses has further fueled backlash. “It’s shocking that someone funding divisive and anti-American activities is being honored,” said a conservative commentator. Yet, the White House hailed Soros as a “philanthropist” dedicated to “strengthening democracy.”
Hillary Clinton, 77, is no stranger to scandals. Nearly 12 years after her husband, Bill Clinton, received the Medal of Freedom, she is being honored despite a contentious public career.
Clinton’s use of a private email server as Secretary of State prompted an FBI investigation, with then-Director James Comey calling her actions “extremely careless” in handling classified information. Though no charges were filed, the incident remains a stain on her legacy.
Clinton also made history—and headlines—as the first woman to secure a major party’s presidential nomination in 2016. Her loss to Donald Trump highlighted deep divides in the nation. “Honoring Hillary Clinton is a slap in the face to millions of Americans who remember her scandals,” said a prominent conservative voice.
In addition to Soros and Clinton, Biden’s list includes Hollywood elites and international figures:

- Michael J. Fox: While admired for his work on Parkinson’s advocacy, some question the political implications of his involvement.
- Lionel Messi: The Argentine soccer star, not an American citizen, raises questions about the scope of the award.

Other honorees include Vogue’s Anna Wintour, known for her liberal activism, and Bill Nye, whose political stances often spark debate. Even civil rights pioneer Fannie Lou Hamer’s inclusion has been framed by some as a political move to appease progressives.
